A business owner should not need to guess what their accountant does every month.

You should know what is being handled, what still needs your input, which SARS items are open, what has already been submitted and where the records sit.

That does not require a complicated reporting pack. It requires clear communication and a rhythm that does not depend on panic.

Blue Cloud’s support is built around that idea: fewer surprises, fewer loose ends and less admin sitting on the owner’s shoulders.

If your business has been working off the old VAT registration threshold in your head, it is worth checking the new position.

From 1 April 2026, SARS states that compulsory VAT registration applies when taxable supplies exceed R2.3 million per year. The voluntary registration threshold is now R120,000.

That does not mean every small business should ignore VAT until the last minute. It does mean owners should stop relying on old rules and start looking at turnover, customer base, supplier VAT, cash flow and admin capacity together.

VAT registration is not only a form. It changes the way your records must behave.

Speak to your accountant before the number becomes urgent.

A SARS notice often feels like the problem. In many businesses, it is only the first visible sign.

The real issue may be older: missing records, weak document storage, a return submitted in a rush, a payment that was made but not matched, or nobody knowing who was meant to respond.

That is why SARS admin needs a process, not a panic folder.

Keep notices in one place. Record the date received. Decide who owns the response. Keep proof of what was submitted. Follow up before the due date.

It sounds basic because it is. Basic is usually what prevents the mess.

Today is the practical PAYE deadline for May payroll.

If the EMP201 is already submitted and paid, file the proof where it belongs and move on. If it is still being checked, look for the errors that cause the most noise later: wrong totals, late payroll changes, old employee details, missing UIF or SDL checks, and payment that has not actually been released.

Payroll compliance is not glamorous. It is one of those admin areas where quiet accuracy matters more than clever fixes.

Blue Cloud helps businesses keep those routines under control before they turn into deadline pressure.

May payroll has a short runway this month.

Because 7 June falls on a Sunday, the practical EMP201 submission and payment deadline moves to Friday, 5 June.

That makes today the right day to check the boring things: payroll totals, UIF, SDL, payment release, proof of submission and whether anyone is still waiting for a last-minute correction.

Small payroll mistakes have a habit of travelling. They start in one month, then show up again in the next reconciliation.

Rather catch the mismatch now.

The first working day of a new month tells you quite a lot.

If May ended with missing records, rushed payroll checks, late documents or SARS admin sitting half-done, June should not start with the same loose ends.

This is a good week to look at the process, not just the deadline. Who keeps the records? Who checks them? Who follows up before the final day? Who knows what has been submitted?

Most compliance stress is boring before it becomes expensive. That is the part worth fixing.

Month-end does not have to feel like a rescue mission.

A calm close usually comes from a few simple habits:

- Know what is due.
- Keep records current.
- Ask for missing documents early.
- Review payroll and VAT before the final hour.
- Work with people who communicate clearly.

The goal is not just compliance.

The goal is less stress, fewer surprises and a business owner who can focus on running the business instead of constantly chasing admin.

This is the week where finance admin either feels calm or starts shouting.

For many VAT vendors using eFiling, the last business day of the month is the important VAT201 submission and payment point.

For employers, the annual reconciliation season is also closing at the end of May.

That makes this a good week to check the basics:

⚠️ Are VAT records complete?
⚠️ Are payroll records reconciled?
⚠️ Are employee details correct?
⚠️ Are outstanding documents being chased now, not on the deadline day?

Good compliance is rarely dramatic.

It is usually the result of small checks done early enough.

"We'll sort it later" feels harmless until later arrives.

Later is when the accountant needs documents. Later is when the deadline is close. Later is when the bank statement does not match the records. Later is when SARS asks a question. Later is when the owner has to stop doing business and start chasing admin.

A good finance admin system only needs one thing: consistency.

Capture the right information. Keep documents where they belong. Review monthly, not only at year-end. Ask for help before everything is urgent.

Follow Blue Cloud, finance admin reminders for South African business owners who'd rather stay ahead than catch up.
