Die Suid-Afrikaanse regering het tydelike verlagings in brandstofheffings aangekondig om huishoudings en ondernemings te help met die druk van stygende brandstofpryse.

Enoch Godongwana, minister van finansies, het die verligtings maatreëls Woensdag, 21 Oktober, tydens sy Mediumtermynbegroting beleidsverklaring aangekondig.

Van 4 November tot 1 Desember 2026 sal die brandstofheffing soos volg verlaag word:
• R1,50 per liter vir petrol
• R3 per liter vir diesel

Die verligting sal daarna tot 5 Januarie 2027 teen laer vlakke voortduur. Die heffing sal dan met R1 per liter vir petrol en R1,50 per liter vir diesel verlaag word.

Die maatreëls sal R10 miljard se verligting bied. Dit sal gefinansier word deur R10 miljard wat voorheen aan die Sentrale Energiefonds oorgedra is, na die Nasionale Inkomstefonds terug te plaas.

Die verlaging is daarop gemik om verbruikers en ondernemings teen stygende koste te beskerm. Die maatreëls is egter tydelik en waarborg nie dat brandstofpryse aan die pompe met die volle bedrae sal daal nie, aangesien ander faktore ook brandstofpryse beïnvloed.

FUEL PRICE RELIEF ANNOUNCED: PETROL AND DIESEL LEVIES TO BE CUT

The South African government has announced temporary fuel levy reductions to ease pressure on households and businesses amid rising fuel prices.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the relief measures during his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on Wednesday, 21 October.

From 4 November to 1 December 2026, the fuel levy will be reduced by:
• R1.50 per litre for petrol
• R3 per litre for diesel

The relief will then continue at reduced levels until 5 January 2027, with the levy cut by R1 per litre for petrol and R1.50 per litre for diesel.

The measures will provide R10 billion in relief, funded by returning R10 billion previously transferred to the Central Energy Fund to the National Revenue Fund.

The reductions are intended to cushion consumers and businesses against rising costs. However, they are temporary levy cuts and do not guarantee that pump prices will fall by the full amounts, as other factors also influence fuel prices.

𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝟳 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿

South African motorists who were already planning to fill their vehicles may want to do so before the next fuel price adjustment takes effect on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, with current projections pointing to substantial increases in petrol and diesel prices.

The figures currently circulating are projections only and are not the final official October fuel prices. The confirmed adjustments may differ from the estimates before the new prices take effect.

Current projections indicate that petrol and diesel could rise by around R3 a litre, depending on the fuel grade.

If an increase of approximately R3 a litre is confirmed, the additional cost of filling a petrol tank could be roughly:

• 35 litres: about R105 more
• 45 litres: about R135 more
• 50 litres: about R150 more
• 60 litres: about R180 more

For example, a motorist filling a 50-litre petrol tank could therefore pay approximately R150 more per full tank if the final increase is close to R3 a litre.

Larger diesel tanks could see an even greater difference.

Based on a projected increase of just over R3 a litre, an 80-litre diesel fill could cost approximately R240 to R250 more, depending on the final adjustment.

Diesel figures used in fuel price projections are generally wholesale benchmarks, and the actual retail price paid by motorists can differ between filling stations.

For motorists who need fuel before the adjustment, filling up before the new prices take effect would mean purchasing that fuel at the current price rather than the higher October price, should the projected increase be confirmed.

The impact could also add up over a month.

A vehicle travelling around 1,000km a month and using approximately eight litres per 100km would consume around 80 litres of fuel. A R3-a-litre increase would add approximately R240 to the monthly fuel cost, assuming the same amount of fuel is used.

Motorists can also reduce fuel use by keeping tyres correctly inflated, combining unnecessary short trips where possible and driving smoothly.

Diesel users may also benefit from comparing prices between filling stations, as retail diesel prices can vary.

The final October fuel price adjustment has not yet been confirmed, and motorists should treat all current figures as estimates until the official announcement is made.
