𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀
For the third week in a row, South Africa received positive news from rating agencies about our credit ratings:
✅ First, Moody’s revised South Africa’s sovereign credit rating outlook from stable to positive.
✅ Then, S&P Global followed, maintaining a positive outlook for the country.
✅ Last week, Fitch upgraded South Africa’s long-term foreign and local currency credit ratings to ‘BB’ from ‘BB-’ maintaining the stable outlook.
South Africa is only the second G20 country to receive a credit upgrade from Fitch this year.
Despite the positive news about improved credit ratings, South Africa must work hard to regain its investment-grade rating, ensuring our economy grows, jobs are created and South Africans experience an improvement in their quality of life. That is what matters.

On the back of Moody’s revision of South Africa’s sovereign credit rating outlook the previous week, S&P Global continued along the same lines, maintaining a positive outlook for the country. This rating outlook is important as markets continue to navigate the uncertainty around the Middle East conflict.

𝗣𝗦𝗚 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗜: 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆?
The world of AI is unfamiliar to many, and yet, it offers a wealth of opportunities for others. This topic often leaves one with more questions and uncertainties than answers, such as:
What about AI and our finances?
What impact will AI have on me, the world and world markets?
Or maybe we should ask, “𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝗼𝗸?” which was the topic of discussion for PSG Menlyn’s recent client engagement session at the stunning The Hawthorn Boutique Hotel at the foothills of the Outeniqua mountain range in George.
In his thought-provoking presentation, Marius Cornelissen, Wealth Manager: Securities at PSG Menlyn, stated the facts, clarified the fallacies about AI, and highlighted the dangers of fakes, as he posed the question: “𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝗼𝗸?”
But this client session was about much more than AI, graphs, politics and world markets; it was also about an appreciation for a centuries-old craft that AI will never replace: the world of wine, wine-making and a family’s love and appreciation for their craft.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀

⭐ The last week of May 2026 starts with “positive” news that Moody’s, the international credit ratings agency, has revised South Africa’s sovereign credit rating outlook from stable to positive. They affirmed the country’s domestic and foreign-currency long-term ratings at Ba2, placing SA in the top section of the “speculative grade” category.

National Treasury welcomed this positive outlook and the recognition that South Africa is gradually strengthening its fiscal performance and sustained commitment to structural reforms, with prospects of increasingly tangible results. This credit rating improvement should also be welcomed because, according to National Treasury, South Africa is currently the only G20 country on a positive outlook from Moody’s.

Unfortunately, the reality for too many South Africans, especially the youth, is that they remain unemployed. South Africa needs to do more to invest in projects that will have a positive impact on the lives and livelihoods of millions who are desperately seeking jobs and income.

📉 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 📈

🌍 Worldwide, even the largest economies are experiencing challenges because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with inflation in the US reaching a 3-year high, and Chinese retail sales slowing considerably.

📊 The local front offered a mixed basket, with good news regarding the increased production in the mining sector. At the same time, the biggest concern is South Africa’s shockingly high rate of unemployed young people. This situation triggers a chain reaction of negative economic effects, including lower tax income for the fiscus. It may cause lasting damage to these individuals’ personal finances, mental well-being and future career path.

👝 💻The high unemployment rate poses constant challenges and requires a whole-of-society approach for solutions.
