Inside the Audit Room 2026

What happens when theory meets practice?

Our BCom Accounting (Third Year), Advanced Diploma in Accountancy, and Bridging Programme in Accountancy students stepped into the world of internal auditing through our innovative (Tax, Accounting, Governance) Project.

For the second year running, students participated in Inside the Audit Room – an interactive simulation and live roleplay experience designed to bring auditing concepts to life.

Working in teams, students took on the roles of employees and internal auditors, exploring real-world business cycles, identifying control weaknesses, and presenting their findings to an audit committee panel.

This hands-on learning experience challenged students to think critically, communicate professionally, and apply their knowledge in a practical business environment.

Well done to all the students for their creativity, professionalism, and engagement throughout the project.

Recently, PhD student, Mr KJB Engelbrecht (Karel), participated in the University of Johannesburg 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, presenting his research on:

"The implications of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment for the South African motor industry."

Karel was the only participant from the Department of Accountancy and one of only two representatives from the College of Business and Economics, joining 17 postgraduate researchers from seven UJ faculties.

Reflecting on the experience, Karel described it as "nerve-wracking, exhilarating and humbling." He shared that being surrounded by so much curiosity, courage, and brilliance reminded him why he loves academia.

While he did not place in the top three, we are incredibly proud of Karel for stepping forward, embracing the challenge, and delivering an outstanding presentation. A special word of appreciation to his supervisors, Prof Marina Bornman and Dr Muneer Hassan, for their guidance and support throughout his doctoral journey.

Congratulations, Karel, on representing Accountancy@UJ so well and showcasing the impact of your research on a national and global issue.
