Budget versus actual: can your board see the gap?
A budget shows what the organisation planned to do. Actual results show what has happened.
The difference between the two is where some of the most useful board questions begin.
A treasurer or board should be able to see:
● Which cost areas are ahead of or behind budget
● Whether expected income or funding has been received
● Where spending patterns have changed
● Which variances need explanation
● Whether action is needed before the reporting period ends
This becomes harder when reporting depends on manual spreadsheets, disconnected information or one
person rebuilding the figures every month.
The right accounting system and reporting structure should make financial oversight easier, not create another administrative exercise.
AT Accounting can advise NPOs on accounting systems such as Xero, suitable CRM integrations and
financial reporting structures. Where historical records have become unreliable, the team can also
assist with reconstructive accounting.
Give your board a clearer financial view.
