On 16 June 1976, the youth of South Africa stood up for something bigger than themselves. That courage didn’t disappear, it lives on in every future generation that dares to dream differently.

At Harbour Wealth, we believe financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools a young person can have. When the next generation understands how to grow, protect, and deploy wealth - they don’t just build personal security. They build communities.

This Youth Day, we honour those who fought for access and opportunity - and we renew our commitment to helping today’s youth build financial futures that honour that legacy.

The best investment you can make in South Africa’s future? Equip its youth.

“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” - Nelson Mandela

One of the more unexpected conversations around our office lately has been about the Strait of Hormuz.

Not exactly casual coffee chat.

But it does raise an interesting point about how connected global markets really are.

Following recent tensions in the Middle East, concerns around disruptions to one of the world’s most important energy trade routes pushed oil prices higher and brought inflation and interest rate concerns back into focus.

For South Africa, that matters more than many people realise.

Higher oil prices can impact:
• Fuel prices
• Inflation
• Consumer spending
• Business costs
• Interest rate expectations

It’s also a reminder of how quickly headlines can influence investor sentiment.

One of the biggest challenges for investors is separating short-term market noise from long-term fundamentals.

Because while geopolitical events can create volatility, successful long-term investing still comes back to process, discipline, and perspective.

Volatility often creates opportunity.
The real question is whether your investment strategy is structured well enough to navigate it without emotion.

What are your thoughts? Do geopolitical headlines influence how you think about investing?

This was an investment decision that did well this last quarter - Infrastructure

In a quarter where almost every asset class moved sharply in one direction or another, infrastructure quietly kept doing its job.

Importantly, while many traditional markets experienced downward and negative pressure at various points during the quarter, infrastructure displayed its defensive nature. It continued to behave differently to many other asset classes, helping soften some of the volatility experienced elsewhere in portfolios.

Whether markets were rallying or falling, infrastructure moved along with low correlation to both. No drama. No big swings. Just steady, uncorrelated return contribution.
That’s exactly the role it’s meant to play in a diversified portfolio — not to be the hero, but to reduce the overall volatility of the ride.

Sometimes the most valuable investments are the ones quietly doing their job in the background.

Our Harbour Wealth PE office recently hosted a padel tournament. In Marc Schroeder’s words, “What a day!”

There was a moment beforehand where I genuinely wondered if everyone would arrive… but not only did they show up, they arrived in full 70s and 80s spirit. Bright colours, retro outfits, good energy, and plenty of laughs from the very start.

Before the games kicked off, I reassured everyone that, despite receiving an invite from a financial advice company, there would be absolutely no awkward moments. Just good people, social padel, informative conversations if anyone wanted them, and a lot of fun. Thankfully, that got plenty of laughs.

We also announced that the “bar tab” included Steri Stumpis… that was a popular one!

The round robin games flowed brilliantly throughout the day, with 80s classics playing in the background and an incredibly fun atmosphere all around. Things became very competitive by the finals, where our very own Linda Glegg and my wife Sinta Barnes Schroeder put up a strong fight against eventual winners Marc and Lorelle de Villiers.

Congratulations as well to our best-dressed winners:
🏆 Roxy Stottelaar
🏆 Bianca van der Vyver

Days like this remind me how valuable community, friendships, and shared experiences really are.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the day special:
Liz Goedhals
Nick Mowbray
Roxanne Stonehouse and Chris Stottelaar
Jaco Van der Vyver and Bianca van der Vyver
Kim Kensley from Chelsea Manor
Desmond Herbst
Luke Morris
Linda Glegg
Hydeh-Mari Elkington

Already looking forward to the next one.

Hours in the boardroom. Brains fried, but still firing.

Our latest Investment Committee Meeting unpacked global events, market behaviour, risks, opportunities, and the importance of staying disciplined through volatility.

A few key reminders:
• Markets move fast, but emotions move faster
• April showed how quickly recoveries can happen after sharp declines
• Long-term thinking still beats short-term reactions
• Process, positioning, and risk management matter more than market noise

We continue to monitor inflation, interest rates, currencies, geopolitics, and global market shifts, always with one focus: helping our clients navigate uncertainty with clarity and confidence.

Yesterday we had our quarterly investment committee meeting, with the team flying in from different regions to spend a few days together.

And honestly? One of the best parts is that we genuinely enjoy being around each other.

Yes, there are long days, serious conversations, market discussions, and strategy sessions… but there’s also a braai afterwards, plenty of laughs, and time spent catching up as people, not just colleagues.

At Harbour Wealth, one of our core values is teamwork.
Not the kind that sits framed on a wall somewhere. The kind that shows up in how we work, support each other, and build relationships across the business every day.

Culture is built in the small moments too. And those moments matter.

To all the moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, moms-to-be, and mother figures… yesterday may have been Mother’s Day, but appreciation like this doesn’t belong to one date on the calendar.

We appreciate our mothers every day.

For the early mornings, the late nights, the life advice, the check-in messages, the quiet sacrifices, and the ability to somehow always know when something’s wrong.

Thank you for everything you do - at home, at work, and everywhere in between. 💛
