Neal McSpadden: bookkeeping exists for business decisions. With year-to-date books done, an owner can plan the next 30, 60 and 90 days and review how last month's efforts went. The work starts with having the numbers first.

Neal McSpadden: 88% of businesses in America gross less than $250,000 in revenue. At $250,000 and above, the business tax return carries Schedules L, M-1 and M-2, which tie the bookkeeping to the return, and he says owners at that level absolutely need professional bookkeeping.

Neal McSpadden on filing status: married filing separately is generally the worst way to file. Head of household means no spouse and you have dependents, so an unmarried filer with kids should check it before defaulting to single.

Neal McSpadden on the two clocks that run on every tax return. An extension moves the filing deadline to October 15. The tax owed is still due at the April deadline.

30/10/2026

What do you owe on January 15? Most owners find out in April. It doesn't have to work that way. The fourth estimated payment isn't a guess if you annualize what you've earned so far.

This week I'm walking through the four 2026 estimated tax dates and who generally needs to pay them, how safe harbor works as a shield against the underpayment penalty, and why safe harbor protects you from the penalty but not from the bill.

Then we'll run a live demo in the Quarterlizer, using invented numbers only, so you can see how a year-to-date projection turns into a number for the fourth installment. You can run your own at quarterlizer.taxsherpa.com. It's free, and you don't need to give an email to see your result.

This is general education, not advice for your situation. Bring your questions in the chat, in general terms.

If your HVAC company has more calls than you can handle, this is what it looks like when the money keeps up.

Illustrative example, not a client.

Picture an HVAC owner doing $1.2M a year who never wonders where it went anymore.

Illustrative example, not a client.

22/10/2026

If your HVAC company is booked solid and the money still is not showing up in your own account, here is the number your revenue is supposed to be turning into.

Target Owner Benefit as a share of revenue, by revenue tier (HVAC benchmark tiers used in our calculators):

- Under $500K: 35%
- $500K to $1.25M: 24%
- $1.25M to $2.5M: 23%
- $2.5M to $10M: 18%
- $10M and up: 19%

Worked example: a $1.2M shop sits in the $500K to $1.25M tier, so the target is 24% of revenue, or $288,000 of Owner Benefit. If the owner is seeing far less than that, the money is getting stuck at Basecamp, before tax strategy even enters the picture.

The percentages are not a straight line. They dip as fulfillment costs change with size, so a bigger shop is not automatically a higher percentage. These are benchmarks to measure against, not guarantees.

Basecamp is the first conversion: revenue becoming Owner Profit. Then the Ascent: Owner Profit becoming usable money. Then the Summit: usable money becoming assets and options. Knowing which stage is stuck is the whole point.
