You might not have seen me for a while, but I'm still here!

Things have been busy at Catapult Accounting for the last few weeks so I've not been out & about so much.

We're lucky to have started working with quite a few new clients & we've been concentrating on getting them onboarded & making sure everything is working perfectly for them.

When we get feedback like this, it makes it all worthwhile. 🙌

🚆 The newest bit of tech I'm using is over 200 years old!

I talk a lot about AI & automation helping businesses save time & money, but sometimes the best solutions aren't new at all - you just need the opportunity to use them.

The reopening of Moseley station means I can now automate my commute into Brum.

Instead of sitting in traffic, stressing about parking and paying a fortune for the privilege, I can spend the journey checking emails, preparing for meetings, or simply enjoying a few minutes of peace before the day starts.

The best part?

I can now get from my front door to New Street in around 15 minutes.

Not every bit of automation has to involve AI 🤖

Sometimes it's just finding a smarter way to do things.

I didn't start Catapult because I love tax returns.

I started it because I kept meeting business owners who were brilliant at what they did, but felt overwhelmed by the financial side of running a business.

Most people don't need more jargon or another confusing report.

They need someone they can talk to, ask questions and get straightforward answers.

I've always believed your accountant should make things simpler, not more complicated.

That's been the aim from day one.

Simple advice. Straight answers. Easy solutions.

🎤 When you run a business, you have to get used to doing things that make you feel uncomfortable.

For me, public speaking is definitely one of those, even in front of my friendly group.

And let's be honest, accounting and tax probably isn't most people's idea of a fascinating topic either!

But if you want to grow your business, you need to put yourself out there.

So whenever I present, I try to bring a bit of personality, a bit of humour and plenty of real-life examples rather than just talking about tax.

Hopefully everyone learned something useful this morning.

And more importantly, hopefully nobody fell asleep!

☀️ Not a bad office for the week...

One day I'll get to the point where I can leave the laptop at home and completely switch off on holiday.

I'm not there yet.

But if I do need to answer a few emails while away, there are worse places to do it.

Last week in Cornwall we were treated to some record-breaking May sunshine, and Ruby seemed pretty happy with the view. 🐾

One of the things I love most about running my own business is the flexibility.

As long as I've got a laptop and an internet connection, I can stay on top of things without missing out on moments like this.

There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your business finances.

But this message sums up how a lot of people feel when speaking to their accountant

You shouldn’t feel embarrassed to ask:

“Can I claim this?”
“What does that letter mean?”
“How should I pay myself?”

Your accountant should explain things in a way that actually makes sense - without jargon or making you feel daft for asking.

Because at the end of the day, they’re your numbers and your business - you need to understand what’s going on.

And if your accountant can’t explain it clearly enough for you to understand… maybe it’s time to speak to someone else.

What a venue for the first Ready, Set Launch event!

A really valuable day hearing about everything from marketing strategies and business growth to mindset and confidence as a business owner.

I always enjoy picking up ideas from people in completely different industries. Sometimes one small conversation can completely change the way you think about your business.

Also finally had some professional photos taken… which felt slightly outside my comfort zone, but probably long overdue 📸🤣

You turn up to a room full of strangers & normally get sold to for the whole event.

That's why is so special.

Just a relaxed friendly space to discuss the challenges all new businesses face & share ideas on what might help

It helps that it's in a stunning venue that you can co-work in afterwards too.

I’ve been asked about bank accounts every day this week, so thought I’d share what I’m currently recommending to clients.

There’s loads of choice out there now… but which accounts are actually decent?

For many Sole Traders & Single Director Limited Companies, I think joinmettle is hard to beat:

- Free business banking
- Free access to freeagentapp (worth nearly £400 + VAT per year)
- Simple and easy to use

If you’ve got larger cash reserves sitting in a tax pot, then allica_bank is well worth a look for the interest rates alone. Speak to Ben Homans if you want to know more.

And if you’re a high earner who values proper relationship banking, Caroline Marsden at handelsbanken comes highly recommended.

The main thing? Don’t pay ridiculous banking fees unless you’re actually getting something worthwhile in return.

It’s much easier than most people think to switch business bank accounts now, so if you want to chat through your options, get in touch.

Most people treat their tax return like a January problem.

It shouldn’t be.

Yesterday at a Rise & Shine event at zellig, one of the speakers Alison Grade from missionaccompuk(author of The Freelancer Bible) made a great point - April is actually the best time to get it done.

Why?

📊 You understand your numbers while they’re still fresh
🤝 You can assess which clients are actually worth keeping
💷 You’ve got time to plan and save for the tax bill
📈 Or even earn interest if the cash is already there
🏡 It makes life much easier if you need a mortgage
😌 And most importantly - it removes that last-minute stress

Plus, with Making Tax Digital on the way, quarterly reporting will soon become the norm for many self-employed people.

So the real question is - why wait 9 months to find out if your business is actually performing?
