Let's clear something up for those looking for an accounting professional.
You do NOT need a CPA to handle your business taxes, fillings, or IRS representation. That belief is outdated and simply untrue.
Enrolled Agents (EA) are federally licensed tax experts, licensed by the IRS. We work with small businesses every day, preparing returns, advising on compliance, and representing clients before the IRS with the same unlimited rights as CPAs and attorneys.
Meanwhile, "CPA" does not automatically mean "tax professional." Many CPAs never touch small-business tax work. They may focus on auditing, corporate reporting, or consulting. The title doesn't guarantee hands-on experience with the issues that may come up with small businesses.
And yes, CPAs often charge more for the same tax work simply because the public assumes they're the only option. They're not.
If someone prefers a CPA, that's their choice. But that's not always the best choice.
Reminder for anyone looking for an accounting professional.
Don't stop at the first title you recognize. Talk to a few different professionals and find the one that actually fits your needs.
Not every CPA does taxes or deals with small businesses.
Not every bookkeeper handles payroll.
Not every tax preparer understands small-business operations.
