Local Business Leaders Team Up to Raise Awareness, Funds At 16th Annual AFSP 5K Feb. 4
WINTER PARK --- John Crossman of Crossman Career Builders and CrossMarc Services, and Nathan Meeks of Meeks Capital are major sponsors and again calling on friends and colleagues in Central Florida to join them for the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention’s (AFSP) 16th Annual Orlando Out of the Darkness Walk Saturday, Feb. 4.
The AFSP’s annual 5K helps raise awareness and funds to support the foundation’s work to stop su***de and moves them closer to its goal of reducing the su***de rate by 20 percent by 2025. So far, they’ve raised over $71,400 toward the goal of $200,000.
From their own personal losses through su***de, Crossman and Meeks, founders and CEOs of Winter Park firms, are dedicated each year to helping AFSP reach their goal of funding and raising awareness.
“Community activists like Nathan and I want to bring as much light as possible to this topic that has always been socially avoided,” Crossman said. “I lost a dear friend to su***de several years ago, and this event has been crucial for my recovery. It can be one of the most difficult losses to bear because of the guilt, but when you come together with others who share similar experiences, life gets better.”
The AFSP’s annual community events throughout the country raise funds and awareness to support prevention of su***de through early detection, diagnosis and treatment of depression and other mental health conditions. They also support survivors of su***de loss.
There’s still time to join them for the upcoming 2023 fundraiser. “You are welcome to join our team or sign up with your own team,” Crossman explained.
"A close family member has struggled with mental health for a long time, and I wanted to be able to process and deal with my own emotions around that. The walk has been immensely helpful to me in this regard, so please consider joining us to promote healing and awareness to those that have been affected by su***de," said Meeks.
The event begins Saturday morning Feb. 4 across from 2420 Lakemont Ave. in Baldwin Park with registration at 8:00 a.m. The walk starts at 9 a.m.
