During a recent City Council meeting, the month of November was proclaimed Native American Heritage Month!
The City of Fort Bragg acknowledges that the land on which we stand today is the unceded traditional territory of local Indigenous peoples past and present. We recognize the sovereignty of the Pomo people, who are the original stewards of this land🌲
While we celebrate local indigenous culture and heritage, we do so knowing that America has not always delivered on its promise of equal dignity and respect for Native Americans; for centuries, broken treaties, dispossession of ancestral lands, and policies of assimilation and genocide sought to eliminate Native populations and their ways of life.
The City of Fort Bragg recognizes and deeply values the vast and diverse contributions made by Indigenous peoples to our community, both historic and contemporary, in the areas of science, philosophy, arts and culture which have enriched the lives of all citizens in the United States, State of California, County of Mendocino and the City of Fort Bragg.
