Here’s the advice everyone learned over the last 10 years: money was basically free, so finance the machine, write the whole thing off with Section 179 or bonus, and let cheap debt do the work.

The write-off part is still very real. For 2026 the Section 179 limit runs into the millions, and 100% bonus depreciation is back and permanent now. On paper you can still write off a massive piece of equipment in year one. That part is generous, and it’s true.

Everyone talks about the Section 179 write-off and bonus depreciation. Nobody talks about what the loan does at today’s rates.

The write-off is a one-time thing in year one. The loan payment, and the interest baked into it, hits every month for years until it’s paid off. And that interest costs dramatically more than it did when everybody learned this playbook. The tax law didn’t change, the price of debt did, and nobody updated the advice.

A deduction does not put the purchase price back in your pocket. A write-off is not a rebate.

Say you’re in the 35% bracket and you buy a $100,000 machine, writing the whole thing off through bonus. You saved about $35,000 in tax. Great. But you still spent $100,000, and you’re still making payments on that note. Buy a machine you didn’t actually need just for the write-off, and you spent a dollar to save 35 cents. That’s lighting the other 65 on fire.

Here’s the part most people miss when they hire their kids.

If your business is a sole proprietorship or a partnership owned only by the child’s parents, wages you pay your own kid under 18 are exempt from Social Security and Medicare. That’s straight from the IRS rules on family employees. Real sweetener.

But it doesn’t apply if you’re an S corp or C corp. As an S corp, you’re withholding those payroll taxes like any other employee.

Why does a 15 year old with a Roth beat a 30 year old every time? Runway. Money going in at 15 has decades to compound, and if the distributions are qualified, it comes out completely tax free in retirement.

For 2026 the Roth limit is $7,000, capped at what the child actually earned. Pay them $10,000 and you could put a big chunk of it in. A few thousand a year during the childhood years, left alone to compound, grows into a staggering number by the time they’re your age.

Bring your kid in to do real work, pay them $10,000 over the year, and that’s a $10,000 deduction on your business. Zero federal income tax on their side, since it’s under the ~$16,000 standard deduction.

Money that would’ve cost you $3,000+ in tax at your rate now costs the family nothing.

Put your kids to work in the business and their wages become a deductible expense, same as any hire. It comes off your business profit.

Here’s the magic: a child with earned income gets the standard deduction like any worker. For 2026 that’s a little over $16,000. The first ~$16,000 they earn is taxed at zero federal income tax. That money would’ve been taxed in your bracket, maybe 30 to 35%. Instead it lands on their return at zero. Nothing dodged, income legitimately shifted to a family member in the 0% bracket.

You carry more personal risk than almost any business we work with. Equipment debt with personal guarantees, job site liabilities, income that swings with the weather. One rough stretch can reach past the business and grab your personal life.

Build the structure before you need it. You can’t build a fire escape while the building is burning.

That LLC only protects you if you treat it like a real business.

If you’re running personal expenses through the business account, groceries, your mortgage, whatever, you’re handing the other side an argument. When a creditor’s attorney can stand up and say “this isn’t a real separate business, they use it like a personal checkbook,” the protection wall can come down. There’s a name for it: piercing the corporate veil. And sloppy books are the number one way owners hand that argument over on a silver platter.

Keep business and personal separate. Clean accounting is what keeps your LLC standing between you and a lawsuit.

Your LLC won't save you here. When you financed that excavator, opened the supply house account, signed the yard lease, or got your line of credit, they made you personally guarantee it. That signature reaches right around your LLC by design. If the business can't pay, they don't stop at the business. They come after you, house included. The LLC does nothing, because you personally agreed it wouldn't.

Read what you're signing. A personal guarantee turns "business debt" into your debt.
