If you are unable to file your taxes by April 15, 2026, be sure to request an extension before that date. An extension gives you more time to file your return, but it does not give you more time to pay. To avoid penalties and interest, pay any taxes you owe by the original deadline.

With a six-month extension, you can file your 2025 federal income tax return as late as October 15, 2026. However, you still need to pay any taxes you owe by April 15, 2026 to avoid penalties and interest.

How to request an extension when you owe taxes

If you make an electronic payment, choose Form 4868 or extension as the payment type. The IRS will treat this as your extension request, so you do not have to file Form 4868 separately.

If you live in an area designated by FEMA as a disaster zone, you might qualify for extra time to file and pay your taxes.

People living overseas, including military members and eligible support staff in combat zones, may also get extra time to file tax returns and pay any taxes owed.
