A financial professional looks beyond a single product. Your goals, income, debt, savings, family responsibilities and future plans all help shape the right protection strategy. Life insurance works best when it is considered as part of the whole financial picture.

Schedule time to review how protection fits into your broader plan.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, so I figured I should give all of my friends and family a little warning ahead of time…you may be hearing from me this month 😂

And I mean a lot of you.

I'm going to be making calls, sending texts, reaching out to people I haven't talked to in a while, and probably being a little more persistent than I normally am. So I apologize in advance if you start thinking, “Alright Jacob, enough already.”

But there's a reason I'm doing it.

If I'm going to spend an entire month talking about the importance of life insurance, I want to make sure the people closest to me have at least had the conversation. I want my friends and family to know what they have, understand what they have, and most importantly, know whether it's actually enough to protect the people they love.

Maybe you have coverage through work and have never really looked at it. Maybe you bought a policy years ago and life has changed since then. Maybe you've always thought life insurance was too expensive. Or maybe it's just one of those things you've been meaning to get around to.

That's okay. Let's talk about it.

Life happens. Families grow. Jobs change. Houses get bought. Businesses get started. Health changes. And unfortunately, sometimes things happen that none of us ever saw coming.

So yes, I'm probably going to bother some of you this September. 😂 But if one conversation helps one family realize they weren't properly protected, it's worth every call.

You've officially been warned!

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. Life insurance is not just about a policy—it is about protecting the real life you are building and the people who depend on you. This month, we will share practical reasons to review your coverage and start the conversation.

Start with a simple coverage conversation.

08/31/2026

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, so over the next few weeks I'm going to spend some time talking about a subject that I think is often misunderstood.

Not just "Do you have life insurance?"

I want to talk about the questions behind it. What are you protecting? How much coverage might make sense? What's the difference between the various types? What does employer coverage actually provide? When should coverage be reviewed?

Life insurance isn't necessarily the most exciting financial topic to talk about, but protecting the people and things that matter to us is an important conversation.

If there's something about life insurance you've never really understood, send me the question. It might make a great topic for one of the posts this month.

Why do so many of us put off reviewing life insurance?

Sometimes we assume what we have through work is enough. Sometimes we bought something years ago and haven't looked at it since. Sometimes life simply gets busy and it stays near the bottom of the list.

And sometimes, if we're being fair, nobody really wants to spend their free time thinking about life insurance.

But circumstances change. Income changes. Families change. Debt changes. Goals change.

A review doesn't necessarily mean something needs to change. Sometimes it's simply about understanding what you currently have and whether it still lines up with what you want it to accomplish.

When was the last time you actually looked at yours?

One of the things I find interesting about life insurance is how differently people think about its purpose.

For one family, the primary concern might be replacing income. For another it could be paying off a mortgage or other debt. Someone else may be thinking about final expenses, education for children, business responsibilities or leaving something behind for family.

There isn't one reason people own life insurance because there isn't one financial situation everyone shares.

That's why I think the conversation should start with the person rather than the product.

What would you want a life insurance policy to accomplish?

08/27/2026

How much life insurance is enough?

$250,000? $500,000? $1 million? More?

There's no number I can put in a social media post that answers that question for everybody.

Income, debt, mortgage obligations, children, education goals, existing assets, current insurance and what you would want the money to accomplish can all affect the conversation.

Instead of starting with a coverage amount, I think there's a more useful question: If something happened to you, what would you want financially taken care of for the people you leave behind?

Once you understand the "why," you can start working on the "how much."

Sickness, injury, or an unexpected diagnosis can interrupt your ability to earn an income due to a covered disability event—even if the rest of your financial strategy is in great shape.
Many people don't discover gaps in their income protection until they're forced to rely on it.
Let's review your current income protection.

Read about what individual disability insurance is, and how this private coverage from NYL can offer personal income protection in the event of a disability.

Term life insurance and permanent life insurance aren't the same thing, and one isn't automatically "better" than the other.

Term insurance generally provides coverage for a specified period of time. Permanent insurance is designed to provide lifelong coverage as long as the policy requirements are met, and certain types may also accumulate cash value.

Which type may be appropriate depends on what someone is trying to accomplish, how long the need may exist, budget and a number of other considerations.

That's why "What's the best type of life insurance?" is usually a much harder question to answer than it sounds.

The better starting point may be: What are you trying to protect?

If you've ever had a retirement account, read this..

Think about every job you've had in the last 20+ years.
Now think about the retirement account that came with it:

The 401(k), 403(b), Thrift Savings Plan, whatever your previous employer called it.

How many are there? Two? Four? More?

Now, a key question: Where are those funds right now?

Not roughly. Specifically. Which custodian?

What's actually inside them?

Which investments do they hold?

If you can't answer those questions with full certainty, you're leaving your own money on the table
