TAX TIP THURSDAY (Small Business) Hiring Help: Thinking about hiring your first employee?

It’s not just wages—you also need to plan for:

✔ Payroll taxes (Social Security & Medicare)
✔ Federal & state unemployment taxes
✔ Workers’ compensation insurance

Workers’ comp doesn’t just protect your employee—
it protects your business from costly claims.

And the good news 👇
These costs are generally tax-deductible business expenses.

Hiring is a big step—make sure you’re set up correctly from the start.

TAX TIP THURSDAY (Small Business) Entity Type: Did you know your business entity type can affect how much tax you pay?

Many small businesses operate as:

• Sole Proprietors
• LLCs
• Partnerships
• S Corporations

Each structure is taxed differently, and the choice can impact:

✔ Self-employment tax
✔ Available deductions
✔ How profits are reported
✔ How much you ultimately pay in taxes

Sometimes the way a business is set up works well.
Other times, a different structure could create tax advantages.

As businesses grow, it can be worth reviewing whether the current structure still makes sense.

The right entity choice can make a meaningful difference over time.

If you’ve never reviewed how your business is structured for tax purposes, it may be worth a conversation.

TAX TIP THURSDAY (Small Business) Retirement Deductions: Small Business Owners — This surprises a lot of people.

Some business owners can reduce their taxes by thousands of dollars simply by contributing to a SEP IRA.

It allows you to:

• save for retirement
• reduce taxable income
• lower your tax bill

And contributions can often be made up to the tax filing deadline.

For many self-employed individuals, this is one of the most powerful deductions available.

TAX TIP TUESDAY (Families & Individuals) Health Insurance: Although the IRS no longer charges a penalty for not having health insurance, if you purchased coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, your tax return cannot be filed without Form 1095-A.

This form reports:

• Your Marketplace coverage
• Premium amounts
• Any Advance Premium Tax Credit you received

Your tax preparer must use this form to complete Form 8962 and reconcile the credit on your return.

👉 If you had Marketplace insurance and haven’t received Form 1095-A, log in to your Marketplace account and download it before filing.

Bringing this form with your tax documents will help prevent delays in filing your return.

TAX TIP THURSDAY (Small Business) 1099s: 📌 How to Avoid 1099 Stress Next Year

If January 31 snuck up on you this year, here’s how to make 2026 easier:

1️⃣ Collect a W-9 BEFORE you pay any contractor
2️⃣ Keep a running total of what you pay each contractor
3️⃣ Separate contractors from employees
4️⃣ Don’t assume payment apps eliminate reporting requirements
5️⃣ Review your vendor list in December — not January

The businesses that handle 1099s smoothly don’t wait until tax season…
They prepare during the year.

If you want help setting up a simple system — even without bookkeeping software — we can help you put one in place.

Proactive is always cheaper than reactive.
