On June 9, 1943, the federal government began withholding income taxes directly from employee paychecks.
Prior to that, most taxpayers paid their taxes after the end of the year. The withholding system was introduced during WWII to improve tax collection and help fund the war effort.
What many people don't realize is that it was originally viewed as a wartime solution. More than 80 years later, it's still part of every paycheck.
