"Revenue is vanity. Profit is sanity. Cash is reality."

A business can be growing and struggling at the same time.

More revenue does not automatically mean stronger margins, healthier cash flow, or a more stable business.

I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time a couple of years ago.

I remember standing at the rim, thinking I understood the scale of it from photos.

I didn't.

No photo captures what it actually feels like to stand there and realize the thing in front of you took millions of years of slow, consistent erosion to become what it is.

Nothing dramatic happened to create it. No single event. Just small forces, compounding over an enormous amount of time.

I think about that a lot with business finances.

The problems I see most often didn't happen overnight. A cost that crept up and never got questioned. A margin that compressed slowly over two years. A cash flow pattern that was always a little tighter than it should have been.

Nobody noticed because nothing looked dramatic.

Until it did.

The Grand Canyon wasn't built in a day. And neither are most financial problems.

The question is whether you're looking closely enough to catch the erosion before it becomes the canyon.
