Tax tip!
Lots of confusion and wrong information out there about employees not being able to deduct non-reimbursed work related expenses anymore.

This is true on your federal tax return, but California still allows these deductions on your state return. The benefit will differ for everyone, but don't forget them when preparing your tax return or sending me your information.

Doing our annual purge of documents. We're required to keep certain documentation for 7 years. Always feels good to get rid of paper and make some more room in the office. And as we get more digital, the paper becomes less and less. Night y'all.

Been in touch with a lot of clients lately who have recently received their 2017 Health Insurance renewal enrollment forms. Most are saying that their premiums for the same insurance have gone up 17-20%. Typically $60-$120 a month. Medical expenses may be tax deductible. This increase in premiums may be what it takes to turn your medical expenses into a deduction. Please have a system in place to keep track of all out of pocket medical expenses.

Something I frequently see is that many families pay little mind to estate planning because the estate tax threshold is so high ($5.45M for an individual, $10.9M for a couple). The fact is that for some farmers and business owners whose inventory and supplies can surprisingly affect this number, this is actually a short-sighted mistake.

And regardless of whether your assets will or will not be affected by this exemption, everyone should focus on what could really be accomplished through their legacy. Start there.

I'll spare you the horror stories about the terrible things that can happen if you're not careful online (but there are plenty if you want to google them). As your trusted tax preparation practice, we make it a point to go well beyond what I'm sharing with you here simply because we handle so much sensitive information.

But for normal families, you don't need to erect the kind of cyber fortress that we have here ... you just need to mind yourself with some simple steps.

A thought for you...

Perhaps you enjoy building things and have turned your one-time hobby into a side-hustle building decks and fences on the weekends (or some such). Get your kids involved in the process as they grow older, and perhaps you can pass along a valuable trade. Even if they become accountants or fire fighters, having the knowledge and experience of a trade to fall back on could be incredibly valuable to them over a lifetime.
