June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, but here at Liberty Bank, our teammates are looking out for our elderly customers each and every day.

Earlier this year, our Willimantic team assisted an elderly customer who nearly fell prey to a telephone scam for more than $9,000.

When the customer asked to withdraw the funds, the branch team felt something was amiss. The customer shared she had received a call from whom she believed was her grandson, stating he had been arrested in Hartford. The caller told her to bring cash to the courthouse and a man would meet her out front to take the money.

Branch personnel questioned the incident and the customer called a family member, who confirmed that the grandson was home and had not been in police custody.

Thanks to the Willimantic team and their attention to detail, the customer did not lose any funds.
