Weāre late to the start but āItās Black History Month!
Since weāre a tax service , weād like to use our platform to celebrate Black leaders who made impacts in economics, taxes, wage equality and more!
Now a message from our owner, Jessica Granade:
I truly believe lifelong learning is the key to success across every aspect of life. Thatās why Iām so excited to share A. Philip Randolph with you today.
Prior to starting this series, I didnāt know about Mr. Randolph and the extent of his activism work as a Civil Rights Leader that created many of the systems we have in place today. Itās my joy to share what Iāve learned with you!
For startersāhe was born on April 15, 1889. Iām sure weāre well aware of that date. :) Itās just coincidence but a fun one! Letās dig deeperš
At 36 years old, Randolph organized the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. It was the first successful African-American led labor union. At that time Black Pullman porters worked long hours, relied on tips to survive, and could be fired at will ā even though their labor powered a major American industry.
āļøHe was a prominent voice in the Civil Rights movement and the Labor Movement.
Iām going to post this next part which is shared from Wikipedia but it details the impact made by his relentless action.
āHis continuous agitation with the support of fellow labor rights activists against racist labor practices helped lead President Franklin D. Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 8802 in 1941, banning discrimination in the defense industries during World War II. The group then successfully maintained pressure, so that President Harry S. Truman proposed a new Civil Rights Act and issued Executive Orders 9980 and 9981 in 1948, promoting fair employment and anti-discrimination policies in federal government hiring, and ending racial segregation in the armed services.
He worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Bayard Rustin to create The Freedom Budget for All Americans which promoted establishing the progressive tax system we have today. This allows your tax contribution to increase as your wages increase.
Before there were W-2s, payroll systems, and worker protections, there were leaders like A. Philip Randolph ā fighting for fair pay and economic dignity.
Join us in celebrating his lifelong work and the sacrifices he made to inspire equality for all Americans.
