๐ŸŽ“ College Students: Letโ€™s Talk Taxes (Real Quick)

If you received a 1098-T, that does NOT automatically mean youโ€™re getting a refund.
I knowโ€ฆ nobody tells yโ€™all this part.

That form is informational. It helps determine if you (or your parent) qualify for an education tax credit if itโ€™s filed correctly.

Hereโ€™s where students get tripped up:
โ€ข Filing when a parent should actually claim the credit
โ€ข Assuming scholarships are always tax-free
โ€ข Forgetting books and out-of-pocket expenses
โ€ข Guessing instead of asking questions

There are credits out there worth up to $2,500, but I see students miss them every year simply because they were never taught how this works.

๐Ÿ“š Taxes = financial literacy.
And college students deserve education on this too.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you have a 1098-T and youโ€™re unsure how to file, donโ€™t guess.
๐Ÿ“ฉ DM me โ€œ1098-Tโ€ or book a consult so we can make sure itโ€™s done right and youโ€™re not leaving money on the table.

โœจ Ask questions. Learn the game. Keep your coins where they belong.

Great morning!!! โ˜€๏ธ

Irs is officially Open!!!

Most refunds are issued within 21 days, but delays can happen.

๐Ÿšจ If you claim EITC or ACTC, the IRS cannot release refunds before mid-February โ€” this applies to your entire refund.

Refunds may also be delayed due to:
โœ”๏ธ Identity verification
โœ”๏ธ Missing or incorrect information
โœ”๏ธ Manual IRS review

๐Ÿ“Œ Direct deposit is the fastest option. Donโ€™t plan bills or purchases around a specific refund date.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ TAX GEM READ THIS ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ

Letโ€™s talk about SINGLE filing status because a LOT of people are confused ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’ญ

๐Ÿ“Œ IRS FACTS (NO OPINIONS) ๐Ÿ“š

You file SINGLE if you are unmarried as of December 31 and you do NOT qualify for another filing status.

Single does NOT require
โŒ dependents
โŒ household support
โŒ owning or maintaining a home

It simply means youโ€™re filing based on your income and your facts ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ’ฐ

๐Ÿ“Œ REAL LIFE SCENARIO ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Youโ€™re unmarried ๐Ÿ‘ค
You have a child ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ
But you did NOT pay more than half of the household expenses ๐Ÿงพ

๐Ÿšซ Even with a child, you do NOT qualify for Head of Household

โœ… SINGLE is the correct filing status

๐Ÿ“Œ WHY SINGLE CAN BE BETTER THAN HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD โš ๏ธ

Filing Head of Household when you donโ€™t qualify can lead to
๐Ÿšจ IRS letters
๐Ÿšจ audits
๐Ÿšจ penalties
๐Ÿšจ paying money back

SINGLE may look smaller ๐Ÿ’ธ But it keeps you protected and compliant ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ’Ž A refund you can KEEP beats a refund you have to PAY BACK โ™Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฐ

๐Ÿšจ Letโ€™s clear this up once and for all ๐Ÿšจ

YES you can file ALL of your children!

๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ Child Tax Credit CTC

You can receive the Child Tax Credit for ALL qualifying children under age 17.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Earned Income Credit EIC

The Earned Income Credit caps at 3 children meaning the credit amount maxes out at 3 NOT that you can only claim 3 kids.

โŒ Do NOT let anyone tell you that you can only claim 3 children.

That is incorrect.

๐Ÿ“Œ You claim ALL your qualifying dependents the credit just calculates differently.

๐Ÿšจ HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD vs SINGLE READ THIS BEFORE YOU ARGUE ๐Ÿšจ

This is IRS-based, not opinion.

๐Ÿ  To qualify for Head of Household (HOH) you must:

โœ… Be unmarried
โœ… Have a qualifying person live with you more than half the year
โœ… Pay MORE THAN 50% of the total household expenses

๐Ÿ“Œ There is NO minimum income requirement for HOH
๐Ÿ“Œ The IRS cares about MATH + PROOF, not feelings

๐Ÿงพ Household expenses the IRS counts:

โœ”๏ธ Rent/mortgage
โœ”๏ธ Utilities
โœ”๏ธ Food eaten in the home
โœ”๏ธ Home insurance/property taxes

โŒ Personal expenses (car note, phone, hair, clothes, etc.) do NOT count

๐Ÿ” REAL-LIFE SCENARIO (MAKE IT MAKE SENSE)

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œI made $20,000 and have 3 dependents. Am I HOH?โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸพIncome and dependents alone do NOT decide HOH.

๐Ÿ“Š $20,000 income โ‰ˆ $1,667/month
๐Ÿ  Rent $1,400
๐Ÿ’ก Utilities $300
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food $600
โžก๏ธ Household costs โ‰ˆ $2,300+/month

โ“The IRS will ask: HOW did you pay more than half?

If:
โ€ข Housing assistance
โ€ข SNAP
โ€ข Family help
โ€ข Shared bills

โ€ฆpaid part of those costs, that part does NOT count as you paying it.

โžก๏ธ If the math doesnโ€™t add up, HOH does not apply, even with dependents.

๐Ÿ” WHY A PREPARER MAY CHANGE HOH TO SINGLE

๐Ÿšฉ Filing HOH incorrectly is a major audit trigger
โœ”๏ธ A preparer must file what is defensible, not whatโ€™s preferred
โœ”๏ธ This protects you from audits, penalties, and repayments

๐Ÿง  BOTTOM LINE

Head of Household is proven, not chosen.

If you canโ€™t show how you paid more than half, the IRS will say Single period.

๐Ÿšจ IMPORTANT TAX FILING NOTICE ๐Ÿšจ

Yโ€™all be mindful if a client has an IRS Identity Protection PIN this is NOT optional
Their tax return cannot be filed without it

๐Ÿ“ฌ The IRS mails the IP PIN every year
If the client does not have that letter filing will have to wait

โš ๏ธ The IRS IP PIN retrieval system is down until the 6th
No workaround no override

This is especially important for cash advance clients
Returns submitted without an IP PIN will be rejected
Rejected advances hurt approval ratios and we do not want our funding rate to drop

Please make sure clients secure their IP PIN before submitting so we avoid delays and unnecessary rejections.

๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ธ Before you say your tax preparer charged you $1,000โ€ฆ READ THIS.

Hereโ€™s what people keep missing ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Your tax preparation fee might be reasonable but there are OTHER fees involved that do NOT go to your preparer.

โœจ Letโ€™s break it down:
๐Ÿ’ป Bank product fees โ†’ not paid to your preparer
๐Ÿ’ฐ Refund advance / loan fees โ†’ not paid to your preparer
๐Ÿข Service bureau fees โ†’ not paid to your preparer
๐Ÿ“ก Transmission & technology fees โ†’ not paid to your preparer
โš™๏ธ Some software fees โ†’ built in and CANNOT be removed

The ONLY fee your preparer controls is the tax preparation fee.

๐Ÿ“ What YOU should be doing:
โœ”๏ธ Review your fee disclosure
โœ”๏ธ Ask questions before signing
โœ”๏ธ Understand what youโ€™re agreeing to

And let me be clear if your preparer canโ€™t explain your fees in plain language, thatโ€™s your sign to find someone else to file with.

๐Ÿ“Œ Knowledge saves you money, confusion, and messy Facebook posts.
