Attending the M.I. Lewis Gala was the exact transition we needed as we stepped into a new season.

From the beautiful décor and thoughtful attention to every detail, to the energy, connection, and sense of community throughout the evening, the entire event was truly memorable.

Thank you, M.I. Lewis, for creating such a beautiful and exciting occasion and for bringing together so many wonderful people and businesses. Bookkeeping Unlimited was grateful to be part of an evening that celebrated connection, community, and the relationships that help us all grow.

September 1st is here, and if you have not gotten your books in order, now is the time to get started.

For those who filed for an extension, October 15, 2026 is the federal tax filing deadline. Waiting until the last minute can make tax preparation much more stressful.

A bookkeeper can help you organize your income and expenses, reconcile your accounts, identify missing records, and make sure your financials are ready for your tax professional.

Do not wait until October to get your books together. Start September organized, prepared, and one step ahead.

Don't get me wrong, a bank statement is a great start!

But all it really proves is that you spent money... it doesn't tell anyone what you spent that money for or if it truly was a business expense.

The IRS (and me, tbh) usually needs a little more context (like a receipt or invoice) that shares what you bought + that it was for your [your niche] business.

Before you feel personally attacked, I'm NOT telling you to never use the Ask My Accountant category...

It's totally okay (and normal) to be unsure about where a certain expense belongs!

But before you hit Save + Close on that expense, I want you to add some sort of context in the memo section.

This gives your accountant something to go off of (and helps you remember why you were confused when they ask you about it 8 months from now!).

A memo as simple as "I bought a new cell phone, but I use it for both business + personal things" does the trick!

And if you want to skip stressing over how to categorize ~any~ transactions? Let me be your bookkeeper! 👋

I hear you and compilied a list!

I've laid out the exact steps you need to take to get your bookkeeping caught back up after the summer.

Don't have the time, energy, or desire to do all that?!

Let's simplify it to just one step: BKU help! 🔗🤭

POV: You were going to catch up on your bookkeeping after that family vacation to Mexico... then after the 4th of July... then after the kids go back to school...

I SEE YOU! 👀

And I've seen this pattern with too many small business owners before you to know exactly how it ends: you desperately searching for a bookkeeper before April 15th!

I've laid out the exact steps you need to take to get your bookkeeping caught back up after the summer.

Don't have the time, energy, or desire to do all that?!

Trying to recreate your entire 2026 mileage log by triangulating your trips from your Google Maps and calendar? 🔍

Do this instead ↓

📲 Download a mileage app like Everlance or MileIQ.

They automatically track all your trips! Each week, you can go in and categorize whether they were for a personal errand or a legitimate business purpose.

More of a pen + paper [your niche]? ✍️

That's totally fine! For each trip, write down these things:

→ The date
→ Starting location + destination
→ Total business miles
→ Specific business purpose
→ Which vehicle you drove (if you drive multiple)

Whatever you do, the IRS wants you to keep a ~timely~ log, so make time for a 5-minute mileage review in your calendar each week. 📆

Have you ever heard someone say that taking the home office deduction increases your audit risk?!

Yeah, that's just an old myth! 🙃

The thing you reallllly need to be careful about if you're a small business owner who primarily works from home is that your home office space should be used regularly + exclusively for your business.

A kitchen table where you set up your laptop from 9 to 3, then host Taco Tuesday at 7? 🌮

That's exactly where the IRS starts to have an issue!

Home offices aren't an automatic red flag, but if you want to deduct yours, you generally need to keep personal use out of it.
