Deerwood Lot Owners' Association, Inc. was established in 1995. As one of the first homeowners' associations in Brantley County, its primary purpose has been to maintain the common properties that were deeded to the association by Deerwood subdivision owner and developer, Clinton A. In the early 1970's, Mr. Clint Robinson bought a large tract of land adjoining the Satilla River
in Atkinson, GA. It
included a canal and boat ramp which accessed the river. It also included acres of swampy lowlands, which, after building large dams, he subsequently turned into two beautiful lakes. He owned and maintained them until 1995. Then, rather than have the large 25 acre lake become property of the county, whose road divided it from the smaller 5 acre lake, the homeowners in the subdivision decided to incorporate and become a homeowners' association. Their primary responsibility was, and still is, through their annual membership fee, to maintain both the privacy and the conditions of the boat ramp and the large lake for the enjoyment of both the members and their guests. The annual membership fee has only been raised once in twenty years. It originally was $50.00, but several years ago was increased by a vote of the members to $60.00 to pay for the increased taxes and liability insurance the corporation has each year. As a corporate entity, the DLOA has a president, vice president, secretary/treasurer and a board of directors. The board meets several times during the year to discuss issues that the association faces. Then in the spring, usually in April, the entire group is invited to an annual meeting where the business and finances of the organization are discussed and officers are elected for the upcoming year.
