ATTENTION ALL TAXPAYERS EXPECTING REFUNDS: Resignations, a lack of senior leadership and cuts to taxpayer assistance programs could slow down IRS processing this year. The White House has also instituted a hiring freeze affecting federal civilian positions, including at the IRS.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically as early as possible in the tax season and choose direct deposit in order to ensure the fastest processing and issuance of any refunds.

Reminder to Furlow Bookkeeping And Tax Service clients: YOU HAVE 3 DAYS TO FILE BEFORE THE 4/15/24 TAX FILING DEADLINE. I see an extension in your near future. 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀
I will not be up at midnight 4/15/24 filing your taxes. The extension will give you an additional 6 months to file. You will have until 10/15/24 to file your 2023 tax return.

The extension will eliminate the late filing penalty-NOT THE LATE PAYMENT PENALTY. If you haven’t filed and will be receiving a refund, you don’t need to file an extension. You have 3 years to claim your refund. After 3 years, the IRS will keep your refund.

Penalties for filing late can mount up at a rate of 5% of the amount of tax due for each month that you're late.

If you're more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $100 or 100% of the tax due with the return, whichever is less.

Filing for the extension wipes out the late filing penalty if you file by the extension deadline.

If you file for an extension and miss the October deadline, you may owe a 5% late-filing penalty for 5% of the amount due for every month or partial month your tax return is late. The failure-to-file penalty is stiff and adds up quickly. For individual taxpayers, the IRS typically assesses a failure-to-file penalty at 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or partial month, capped at 25% of the total.
