It's not a surprise to any business owner that not all payment processors are alike. While most often we're considering associated fees, another thing to consider is how or if the programs integrate well with accounting programs like Quickbooks. If you're a Quickbooks user you may find that platforms like Helcium, Square, Stripe, Shopify, Chase Payment Solutions, and a few others are easiest to use. You aren't limited to 3rd party processors though. Did you know that Quickbooks also has its own payment processor? Quickbooks Payments makes collecting payments, sending invoices, and utilizing other offered products nice and easy. If you're in the non-profit sector, these donation platforms also integrate seamlessly with Quickbooks: Bloomerang, Givebutter, Donorbox, and Neon One.

If you aren't quite sure which processor best suits your for-profit or non-profit company, set up a meeting with your bookkeeper to verify your options and figure out exactly what features you do and don't need for your business to thrive.

We made it through tax season! And now that we’ve all had a few work days and a weekend to catch our breath, it’s time to refocus on longevity. We’re mentally moving away from deadline-mode and toward longterm business health and success. That said, what we learn about ourselves and our business during tax season can inform how we run things going forward. If this time has felt especially stressful and had you scrambling to collect and organize documents, or file an extension, that’s a sign that proactive planning is needed and maybe an expert hand or two to lighten the burden going forward. Being more hands off and trusting experts to take care of your business allows you to more easily focus on what inspired you to start your business in the first place.

Even if tax season felt like a breeze and you have all the support you need to keep thriving, assessing tax findings can still benefit you. Consider having a meeting with your tax preparer to debrief. Whether you learn that nothing needs to be changed or small tweaks need to be made to keep things going smooth for next year, you’ll have the proper insight to move forward confidently.

Tax day is only 6 days away! Before your submission, double check that you’re accounting for all applicable tax deductions your business qualifies for.

A few common deductions include:
- work-from-home expenses
- marketing costs
- continuing education for skill development
- work related commuting costs
- business programs like software and apps to make running the business easier
- retirement contributions
- self employed health insurance premiums

IRS rules allow businesses to deduct expenses that are “normal and ordinary” respective to the industry your business operates in. Not all business structures handle tax deductions, or even tax forms, the same way. Don’t pass up on opportunities to save your business money and always check with your tax professional to make sure you’re doing it right!

Are you a Quickbooks user? If yes, are you utilizing its convenient features to maximize your business’ tax savings? Quickbooks has a mileage tracker and automates all tracking for tax-deductions and reimbursements. The IRS updated the reimbursement rates for 2026, which you can read more about here: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-sets-2026-business-standard-mileage-rate-at-725-cents-per-mile-up-25-cents #:~:text=Beginning%20Jan.%201%2C%202026%2C%20the%20standard%20mileage,purposes%2C%20down%20a%20half%20cent%20from%202025.

Quickbooks users, don’t gloss over features that can save you both money and time! Take some time to explore all the features the program has to offer and don’t be afraid to reach out to Quickbooks experts to find out how to most effectively use them for your business. Remember, these programs are built to serve you and contribute to your professional success!

IR-2025-128, Dec. 29, 2025 — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that the optional standard mileage rate for business use of automobiles will increase by 2.5 cents in 2026.

When categorizing your expenses, be intentional about both the categories you create and how you use them. Organizing expenses is about more than books just looking clean—it’s about function. Use categories to bring you clarity about your business not just to have a “box” to put things in. More clarity = better decision making. Remember, too, categories will differ from business to business. It’s important to make sure that how you categorize is most effective for your industry and business model.

As a business owner, and especially as a first time business owner, one of the most momentous moves you can make is to insert yourself into a community of business owners to both contribute to and learn from. When driven people who all share the vision of growth come together to trade lessons learned in times of both success and failure, everyone wins. There’s more opportunity to expand industry knowledge, pass referrals that build mutual support, gain valuable mentorship, and increase professional visibility. There is so much power in nurturing lateral professional relationship. Additionally, if you find yourself with a chance to adopt a mentor within your industry, you’ll have access to information gained solely through experience that has the potential to help you and your business thrive. Conversely, being a mentor pushes you to identify what is most important for your mentee to know about your industry and positions you to refine or solidly the very foundation your business was built from.

You can start building professional relationships by doing a quick Google search to see what networking groups meet in your area. Not every group is the right group for you, which is why exploring more than one at a time can get you where you need to be faster while also increasing your professional visibility. There is little to lose and a lot to gain by putting yourself out there and seeking those professional relationships that result in mutual support and overall growth.

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to get your small business idea up and running and it’s time to determine which business structure is most appropriate. The structure of your business influences your day-to-day operations, tax filing, personal asset risk levels, and more. This decision is crucial and working with your accountant, consultant, and or attorney is always helpful in figuring out which structure makes the most sense for your business type and personal life. Common business structures include:

Sole proprietorship: Simple and owned by one person. There is no separation of assets.
Partnerships: Shared by two or more people, can be set up as an LLC, and both risks and profits are shared.
Corporation (C Corp or S Corp): Complex administrative formality, a legal entity separate from its owner(s) and offers the highest level of liability protection.
Limited liability company (LLC): Simple with flexible tax options, and personal assets are protected.

The pictured chart, provided by the U.S. Small Business Administration, offers an expanded comparison of these common business structures and more. To learn more, head to: https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business/choose-business-structure -business-structures
