I have been warning folks for months about the looming premium hikes on the health care exchanges if Congress didn’t extend the COVID era supports. Of course there were deniers and detractors. But the reality is hours away from this posting. It remains to be seen if any consensus will develop in the new year over this issue.

I know many of you have absorbed the news that most Affordable Care Act policies are going up dramatically after end of the year. Get with your insurance brokers to explore alternatives. Fill your prescription s before the 31st. Request drug manufacturers discount programs directly. Try to work with your primary doctors to avoid expensive trips to the ER if possible. And above all, lobby your political representatives for solutions in 2026.

Health Care Open Enrollment is around the corner starting October 15 and November 1, 2025. This season will be especially difficult due to the recent changes in the law affecting health care. New rules on Medicaid, the unlikely extension of the health premium discounts from the expiring Covid program and the uncertainty of health insurers on how to price 2026 premiums. Be prepared to be flexible and talk with your agent on possible strategies to help deal with price increases.

What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid? The first was authorized by the Social Security Act to address the health care needs for individuals aged 65 or older. The second, Medicaid, is also authorized by federal law as a federal-state sharing program for populations that are income-eligible, usually up to age 64, including children and the disabled. The states administer programs for Medicaid. Medicare is under the federal umbrella.

Advising all citizens to hold off on any rash assumptions concerning the U.S. health programs area. The situation is very fluid and new right now with a different political Administration, not-yet confirmed officials and the already set-in-motion policies from the Biden Administration. Also remind you that presidential Executive Orders do not overturn existing law for which Congress must weigh in. What we are seeing now across the board is a "flooding of the zone" on policy topics. All Executive Orders will not be enacted, and some will be forgotten by the authors as time goes on. Relax and stay informed. We will try our best to bring to your attention some relevant matters that do affect you and your family.

2025 Lower Prescription Drug Costs

If you or a family member is on Medicare, out of pocket costs for medications are lower thanks to a budget agreement during the Biden Administration. Costs are capped at $2000 yearly. Your insurance company for your drug plans must notify you of the changes and options on how to go forward. If you missed any written notices, call the number on the back of your medical cards for an explanation.
The most important change in the law is the elimination of the "donut hole" when you have substantial drug expenses. In its place, the costs are now spread between drug manufacturers, the government and your insurance company. This will also affect your retail copays.

Did you know that the Social Security Act that enabled Americans to have Medicare, Medicaid, Survivor benefits for widows and children, disability among other critical health programs was authorized by this law started in the President Franklin Roosevelt era? Further that the law itself has been amended, added on and improved by Congress over 2500 times since then? It started much smaller than it eventually evolved into. But the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare has not been amended, improved or changed even once since 2011 due to politics. If it could have had the same kind of scrutiny and improvement as the Social Security Act by Congress, we would undoubtedly be seeing a better program that is responsive to necessary changes. This would benefit the American people who depend on this law.

Although each political Administration makes changes in policies and procedures on matters of health insurance and Medicare, most issues will only be modified without wholesale policy changes. many of which must go through the Congress anyway. Make sure you pay attention to any communications from your insurance carrier which must keep you notified of any changes that will affect your coverage. And always turn to your professional broker or agent for questions and explanations.
