📨Mailing Tax Payments Or Tax Returns?
Important changes to know: Taxpayers who submit payments or filings via USPS should know of a recent change to how postmarks are applied, which can affect whether those payments and filings will be considered “on-time.” Under the new rule (effective December 24, 2025), the date stamped on mail is based on when it is first processed at a postal facility, not when it was dropped in a mailbox or handed in at the post office. Because of this, a tax return or payment mailed on the due date could receive a later postmark – sometimes days later – which a tax office would view as "late."
