Another Father’s Day is upon us, and one might be thinking about gifts. However, the often-heard refrain that “you don’t need to get me anything” may be serious instead of empty words. According to a survey by YouGov about a third of the fathers surveyed said they would prefer no gifts. The majority responded that their favorite activity on Father’s Day is spending time with their kids. https://yougov.com/en-us/articles/49590-what-do-american-dads-want-for-fathers-day

One way to spend time together and connect might be by watching a movie centered around the love and struggles of a father, and Parade.com has put together a list of 55 movies that might fit the bill for Father’s Day. https://parade.com/1219965/stephanieosmanski/fathers-day-movies/

Regardless of whether you celebrate with a gift, some time together, or something else entirely, we hope all the fathers have a marvelous Father’s Day this year.

Obituaries may be considered pretty commonplace, as they have largely been similar in the newspaper as we’ve grown up. However, newspapers are becoming scarcer, scammers exploiting personal information are on the rise, and thus creating an obituary might involve new angles. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. With two thirds of the American populace at risk for a brain-related illness, it’s a topic that can weigh heavily on the minds of the aged, and the people who are their caregivers. Brain health is something that many organizations are continually trying to combat with research, and raising awareness of the topic can be done in June by wearing purple. https://www.alz.org/abam

If you are looking for a few simple tricks to try to protect yourself or a loved one, these “10 Healthy Habits for Your Brain” from the Alzheimer’s Association are worth a look. https://www.alz.org/help-support/brain_health/10-healthy-habits-for-your-brain

Although age discrimination is usually considered when it comes to the workplace, one should also consider how it affects other things in our lives. Sometimes, that special treatment can be positive, such as a senior discount, special early bird hours for seniors at a grocery store, or being eligible for certain government benefits. Other times, it may not be so nice, and worth examining further. For example, there is recent statistical research from Boston College that reveals older home sellers have a lower rate of return on their housing investment. Each Memorial Day we spend time remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to create and maintain the freedoms we enjoy in this country. It can be difficult or awkward because we both want to celebrate their success and achievement, but not dismiss the seriousness of their sacrifice. The Wounded Warrior project has this advice on their news page about Memorial Day: “Rather than ‘Happy Memorial Day,’ say something like ‘Have a meaningful Memorial Day.’ “

From all of us at Garden State Trust Company, we hope you have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day this year.

Recently, there was an informative article in Forbes about new reporting rules effective this year regarding transfers of homes to trusts. https://www.forbes.com/sites/martinshenkman/2026/02/28/new-reporting-rules-effective-march-1-affect-home-transfers-to-trusts/ If knowing the differences between Beneficiary Defective Irrevocable Trusts (BDITs) and Qualified Personal Residence Trusts (QPRTs) and other such acronyms appeals to you, that is great and we are kindred spirits. If not, it is still great because we can step in and ensure the reporting rules are followed on your behalf and the appropriate type of trust is used for your unique situation.

The biggest issue with doing it yourself, is that you have to do it yourself, and often be up on the latest way to do it correctly. A professional trustee such as Garden State Trust company participates in continuing education to ensure they are staying compliant. Sometimes, even if you can do it yourself, it’s better to focus on things that excite you more and delegate. Let us know if you’d like to delegate trust management to us.
