Juneteenth is coming up this Friday. This is the day that Union troops marched into Galveston, TX and announced slavery was over on June 19, 1865 at the conclusion of the Civil War freeing all the people who were still enslaved in TX at that time. This is the opportunity for us to celebrate the end of that dark chapter in our country's history. So, our office is closed on Friday. We will be back on Monday, June 22nd for regular hours.

It is beginning to appear that the Iran conflict is close to reaching a resolution. The price of oil is down about $50/barrel from the high in March/April and only about $10/barrel higher than it was right before the conflict started. I think you will start to see gasoline at the pump coming down soon and by a substantial amount. The price at the pump coming down should really help to get inflation down too. Still very early in the process yet but it is beginning to look positive for people filling up their tanks soon.

Job creation for May was very good with 172,000 new jobs. The inflation rate coming in at 4.2% was not good and the primary driver of that was the price of oil. The Iran conflict is not yet resolved and transit through the Strait of Hormuz continues to be a problem so the price of oil will continue to be high until the freedom of navigation is achieved. Oil production in the US, Canada, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Venezuela has been ramping up to fill part of the gap, Saudi Arabia is pushing their pipeline up to the 7 million barrels a day maximum to avoid the Strait of Hormuz and the United Arab Emirates is also moving to have a pipeline in place in 2027 to avoid the Strait of Hormuz as well. Saudi Arabia is also looking into the possibility of building a 2nd pipeline that would be large enough to handle all of the oil that normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz which has been about 20 million barrels per day. These things will help mitigate the problem. There has also been discussion about sending a pipeline to the Mediterranean as well which would bypass the Strait of Hormuz but nothing happening on that front as of yet and multiple countries and politics associated with that idea. When will the Iran conflict reach an end is a pretty good question but in the event it does not it appears that things are moving to take the Strait of Hormuz out of the problem with regards to the movement of oil and that seems likely by sometime next year if not before. Once the oil is able to move again I would expect the oil market to come down substantially and the price at the pump will follow and the inflation associated with it will also come down as well at that point. If you ever want to talk stop in for a chat.

Do 529 College Savings plans offer advantages over alternatives? Let's look at that.

The stock market has had a bit of a wild ride the last couple months. Up Down. Up Down. Up Down. No. I am not calling off my pushups. I could not do 3 pushups anymore anyway. The market responds to news and with all the people who self invest and are just a click away from buying or selling the spikes tend to be larger and more frequent than they were 20 years ago. I do pay attention to the news because it can and does affect the market but I pay even more attention to the fundamentals. How are we doing on job creation? Added 115,000 jobs in April so pretty good. How are we doing on unemployment? Holding pretty steady at 4.3%. How are we doing on trade deficit? March (latest available info) was up a little over what it was in February but less than half what it was for March '25 and down from March'24 so that shows improvement. How is inflation doing? That is a concern as it was at 3.8% but core inflation without food or energy was still at 2.8%. The rise in the cost of oil is having an effect but inflation is nothing close to what it was in '22 and '23. If we can see a resolution with Iran and then price of oil should come down and I would expect inflation would also then drop. So, as I look at the fundamentals I see an economy that appears to be on a very good footing and should continue to do well for the rest of the year given current information.
