The Great Alone is set in Alaska, which I know is enough to get some of you. It's not a van life book, but plenty of us have that trip north on the list.

I'll pick up anything Kristin Hannah writes, and this is the one I kept listening to long past the point I normally stop. I had to know what happened next.

Leni, the main character, starts over somewhere she knows nothing about and has to learn to rely on herself. There were stretches where I saw myself in her. Learning self-reliance. Starting over in a new place.

A narrator is what makes me an audiobook person. They turn characters into people.

The evenings are long now and they only get longer until December 21.

If you're eligible for the Audible trial, it's free for 30 days, then $8.99 a month. Cancel before day 30 and you owe nothing. One catch on the Standard plan, your monthly pick locks when you cancel, so finish the book first. My link is pinned in the first comment.

Another sneak peek at the ProMaster build, and this is the unglamorous part. Insulation and part of the wall are up, ragged edges and fluffy white bits included. It’s not pretty, but this is what keeps the van livable when the temperature drops.
If you’ve insulated a van, what surprised you most about it?

Thinking about van life in your 60s? Claiming Social Security at 62 versus 70 can mean a gap of tens of thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

Claim early and the reduction is permanent. Wait and the benefit grows. Most people have heard that much. Fewer have worked out the point where waiting actually pays off, because it depends on how long you expect to live.

Then there's health insurance. If you're a few years from Medicare, your Social Security income can shrink the subsidy that keeps your premiums manageable.

And plenty of vanlifers are still earning. Seasonal work or a remote job while you collect early can mean part of your benefit gets held back.

This is one page from Chapter 7 of the Van Life Foundations Manual. The chapter covers the factors unique to van life.

If you had to pick your claiming age today, what's the one thing you'd want to know first?

Want to see what's inside? Comment binder and I'll send you the Manual details.

Sneak peek from the ProMaster build! 👀

Here’s a first look at my ceiling going in. I’m installing a Roadloft camper van conversion in my 2025 Ram ProMaster myself, so there’s plenty more of this coming.

Overhead lights or lamps, which one do you actually reach for at night?

Hope you made good use of your extra hour today! ⏰

Did you actually spend your hour on something, or did it just vanish into the afternoon?

Three years in a minivan, and I never once stood up inside my own home.

The ProMaster has a high top, and I'm still adjusting.

Stealth camping in a city is one of the most practical skills a solo vanlifer can develop. I did it in my Sienna, and a minivan was the best tool I found for it, because nobody looks twice at a minivan.

There's more to it than parking somewhere dark and hoping for the best.

Henry weighs 9 pounds. A broken leg or a poisoning at an emergency vet clinic can run $2,000 to $5,000.

On the road you're often hours from your regular vet, which means the emergency clinic is the only door open. The bill doesn't care that it's a small dog.

Pet insurance, a savings fund, or both, it's a decision that's far cheaper to make before the night you need it.

What's the most unexpected vet bill you've ever paid, and what was it for?
