Duty Evasion Scheme Costs Companies $549.5M in Landmark Aluminum Fraud Settlement

A group of California-based companies, including Perfectus Aluminum Inc. and related warehousing entities, have agreed to pay $549.5 million to settle allegations under the False Claims Act for allegedly evading antidumping and countervailing duties on aluminum extrusions imported from China.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the companies are accused of misdeclaring imported aluminum products as “pallets” to avoid paying required Customs duties. Investigators found that the goods were allegedly misrepresented in Customs entry filings, allowing more than 2.2 million aluminum extrusions to enter the U.S. without proper duty assessment.
