Can I submit my tax return after the tax filing deadline?

Yes, you can submit your federal tax return after the April 15th deadline if you are not due a refund and do not owe money, as there is no penalty for late filing in this scenario. However, you should submit as soon as possible to avoid potential issues, such as missing the three-year window to claim refunds or to maintain compliance.

What’s the 3 Year Rule ?

If you are actually due a refund, you are obligated to file within three years of the original deadline to claim said refund.

Can I claim my parents as dependents if they receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits?

➡️Social Security benefits are considered taxable income; however, they do not automatically preclude claiming a parent as a dependent.

IMPORTANT : Provided your parent satisfies the Internal Revenue Service's income and additional eligibility requirements, you may still claim them as a dependent even if they receive Social Security benefits.

Key Requirements for Other Disabled Relatives (Qualifying Relative)

Relationship: The individual must be a parent, sibling, or other relative, or someone who resided with you for the entire year.

Support: You must have provided MORE THAN HALF of their total support.

Gross Income: Their gross income must be below the IRS threshold (less than $5,050 for tax year).

No Age Limit: The age limit does not apply to a disabled adult CHILD, but it does apply to older relatives unless they are disabled.

How to Determine "More Than Half" Support✅

☑️Calculate all expenses for the disabled person (food, housing, medical, clothing, etc.).

☑️Determine what portion of these expenses you paid.
If you paid over 50%, you meet the support test.

Potential Tax Benefits‼️

➡️Claiming them can lower your tax bill through credits or deductions.

➡️You may be able to deduct certain medical expenses for them if you itemize deductions.

THIS MAY HELP SOMEONE 🚨

🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨

Tax Topic 201 outlines the IRS collection process, which begins when a taxpayer fails to pay the full balance shown on their return. The IRS sends a series of notices (starting with CP14), demanding payment, adding penalties/interest, and potentially leading to liens or levies if ignored.

Key Aspects of the Collection Process (Topic 201):

☑️Initial Notification: The process starts with a letter detailing the amount owed, including tax, penalties, and interest.

☑️Collection Actions: If the balance is not paid, the IRS may file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien (public notice of debt) or levy assets (garnishing wages, seizing bank accounts).

☑️Payment Options: Taxpayers should pay in full to stop penalties or explore options like an installment agreement if they cannot pay immediately. (ASK YOUR PREPARER ABOUT THE INSTALLMENT AGREEMENT AVAILABLE)

☑️Appeals: Taxpayers have the right to request a Collection Due Process (CDP) hearing to contest levy actions.

🚨 If you have a OFFSET your Tax Preparer can see that you have a Offset but they Cannot see where the Debt is from❗️

If you call the IRS OFFSET Line it will tell you that you do not have a OFFSET bc the Offset has been Paid❗️

You will also Receive a letter in the mail stating EXACTLY where the Debt was Applied to.

If it is NOT a “Federal” Debt & you called Before Tax Season & the Offset line stated you did NOT have a Offset that means The Debt WAS NOT Federal‼️

Federal Debts Are things like :

↪️ Child Support or unemployment

↪️ Back taxes owed to the Internal Revenue Service
Federal student loans (like Direct Loans)

↪️ SBA loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration & PPP

↪️ Certain federal benefit overpayments (like some Social Security overpayments)
