As we start the push to the end of another tax season I just wanted to thank all those who continue to put their trust in me and allow me to prepare their returns. It is great to catch up with all that I get to visit with, talk on the phone with or just a simple note. For me the work I do is much more than just receiving a check at the end of the engagement. This is the 14th tax season on my own and so thankful I trusted those who gave me the confidence to go on my own.

Had our Holiday Flyover today. What a great pic of Sidney Lanier Bridge.

The IRS just released IR-2017-156 giving Hurricane Irma victims in the entire state of Georgia until Jan 31, 2018 to file certain individual and business tax returns. This includes those that have not yet filed their 2016 business and personal income tax returns.

Thus far the IRS has only granted 3 counties in GA, affected by Hurricane Irma, an extention of time to file various tax returns. They are Camden, Chatham and Glynn. I will keep you updated if others are added. Those that qualify now have until January 31, 2018 to file.

I would like to take a minute to thank everyone for a great 2016 and to wish you a happy 2017. A few important dates to consider for 2017. First the IRS announced the e-file season will start January 23rd this year. The IRS has also changed the filing due dates for 1099s, W-2s, C-Corps and Partnerships. Finally, April 15th falls on Easter Weekend this year. Although a long shot, I am hoping to wrap up April 14th. Thank you again for a great 2016 and I look forward to seeing you in 2017.

Thus far the IRS has only issued guidance to NC for Hurricane Matthew relief for late filing. For those in GA, the status is "currently under review" and "pending further assessments." The bottom line is to file your 2015 personal income tax return as soon as you can. An extension only extends the time to file your tax return. It does not extend the time to pay any tax due. The IRS will tell you the tax was due April 15th. So don't expect relief for paying your tax post April 15.

10/11/2016

Please remember that those that have extended their 2015 Personal Income Tax Returns the due date is 10/17/16. For those that were in the path of the recent hurricane it is possible the IRS will extend the due date beyond this Monday, but I have not yet received any guidance.

Wanted to take a minute to thank everybody for what turned out to be a very smooth tax season. Special thanks to Ms M.A. and Ms Anita who stopped by the office with treats for us. Also to my friend Mr Joe who annually stops by with a book related to submarines.

Typically every couple of weeks or so I receive a call from a client asking about a call or e-mail they received from someone claiming to be from the IRS and trying to collect for back taxes owed (or should I say, claiming to be owed). Be very careful as it is extremely rare the IRS will call you and I have never heard of the IRS sending e-mails to taxpayers. If the IRS wants to contact you, they will normally mail you a letter.

The IRS officially opened the filing season on January 19th for 2015 personal income tax returns. Please feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns you may have. As always, the best compliment one can give me is a referral.

In an effort to help prevent fraud the GA Dept of Revenue now has an app (myGAtax) that will alert you everytime a GA tax return is filed using your Social Security Number. The app will also tell you when you should expect to receive your refund
