You don’t need to walk into a financial planning meeting with everything neatly organized or fully figured out. In fact, most people don’t. What matters most is having a starting point. 🏁

Many people delay meeting with a financial planner because they assume they need organized accounts, clear goals, or a strong understanding of financial language before they begin. But financial planning isn’t about having all the answers before you walk in the door.

It’s about being ready to engage, ask questions, share what you do and don’t understand, and start the conversation.

In many couples, one partner naturally takes on the role of the “money manager” — sometimes because of gender roles, and sometimes because the other person simply feels less comfortable with finances.

😅💰That arrangement may seem practical, but it can also create pressure. The partner managing the finances may feel responsible for having all the answers, even when they don’t. Over time, that pressure can lead to stress, avoidance, or tension around money decisions.

🧘 Meanwhile, the other partner may stay disengaged, trusting that everything is handled. But when one person carries the full financial load, both partners can feel vulnerable in different ways.

Tara Unverzagt (SBFP President & Senior Financial Planner) encourages couples to build more transparency and shared understanding. When both partners take part in money conversations — even if one handles the day-to-day details — financial decisions can feel more collaborative and less stressful.

Financial conversations look different today than they did a generation ago. 🤳 In a cashless, app-driven world, spending, debt, and even investing can feel less tangible — which makes a strong understanding of the basics more important than ever.

We appreciated this podcast conversation from Charles Schwab on keeping it simple when teaching young people about finances: budgeting, saving, goal-setting, understanding credit, and knowing the difference between investing and gambling.

💸 🙋 When people have financial questions, their first instinct is often to turn to family or friends.

While those conversations can be helpful, it’s important to remember that even well-meaning advice may come from someone with a limited perspective or a very different financial situation.

💡Consider learning from and confiding in people whose financial habits and outcomes reflect the kind of life you hope to build. Realistic role models — people whose paths feel attainable and aligned with your priorities — can offer more useful guidance than chasing an image of wealth that may not reflect financial security at all.

💸💭 One of the biggest misconceptions people carry about money is the belief that everyone else has it figured out. When someone is struggling with debt, saving, or budgeting, it’s easy to assume they’re the only one facing those challenges.

Tara Unverzagt (SBFP President) encourages clients to test that assumption by speaking up.

“You're not alone. If somebody would just start talking about it, it would help everybody," she says.

Opening the conversation can even lead to creative solutions that allow people to stay connected without compromising their financial goals.
