Are you familiar with the IRS Taxpayers Bill of Rights? The IRS has enumerated your rights as a taxpayer under 10 points along with an explanation of the processes for examination, appeal, collection, and refunds. It is called the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, and you can obtain a copy free of charge from the IRS, or your tax advisor can print out a copy for you. Just ask for IRS Publication One. For more information, check with David Benfield, CPA, for details.

A simple mistake on your tax return could delay your refund. Misspelled names, incorrect social security numbers, filing status errors, math mistakes, or simply failing to date and sign your tax return can cause the IRS to delay processing your tax return and any tax refund.

E-filing can help you catch mistakes and avoid delays, but if your tax return is lengthy or complex, enlisting the help of a qualified tax advisor may be your best bet in the long run. You can rely on the services of David Benfield, CPA.

What’s the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit? A tax credit is an amount you subtract from the tax you owe which can lower your tax payment or increase your refund. A tax deduction is an amount you subtract from your income so you don’t pay tax on it. Both credits and deductions must be properly documented and claimed. A tax professional can you make the most of your situation. For more information, check with David Benfield, CPA.

If you finalized an adoption in 2025, you may qualify for an improved adoption tax credit. Because of changes to the adoption tax credit under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” you can now claim up to $17,280 per eligible child, or eligible expenses related to international, domestic, private, and public foster care adoptions. Restrictions and limits apply. Ask your tax professional for guidance concerning the improved adoption tax credits. For more information, check with David Benfield, CPA.

Traditional or Roth IRA—which is better for you? Your annual contribution to a traditional IRA is tax-deductible, assuming you meet the income and eligibility requirements. You pay taxes when you withdraw the funds, presumably when you’re in a lower tax bracket. A Roth IRA is not tax-deductible now, but withdrawals in retirement are tax free. Your tax advisor can help you determine which the better choice is for you. Check with David Benfield, CPA, for more information.

What’s the difference between a holiday turkey and a holiday bonus? If your employer gave you a holiday turkey or roast or similar minimal value gift, it’s unlikely to have tax implications. Not so if you received a year-end cash bonus, which the IRS considers taxable income. Different gifts are treated differently by the IRS for tax purposes, so consult with your tax professional if you have any questions about the gift you received. Do you know how many tax brackets there are? For the 2024 tax year, there are seven different tax brackets, all adjusted for inflation. These brackets range from a low of 10% to a high of 37%. Making sure you get every deduction and credit to which you are entitled can help lower your actual tax bracket, which is yet another reason to consider hiring a competent CPA or tax professional, like the staff at David Benfield CPA.

TAX TIP 7

If you run a successful business, you don’t want to run afoul of the IRS. Reduce your risk of an IRS audit by claiming only legitimate, well-documented deductions by properly classifying employees as employees and not independent contractors, by paying your payroll taxes and quarterly taxes on time, keeping detailed records including profit and loss statements, and filing an accurate tax return. Don’t gamble by cutting corners. You can depend on the services of David Benfield, CPA.

TAX TIP 6

Are you getting all the tax credits you deserve? A qualified credit can be deducted from the taxes you owe; for instance, being a low to moderate wage earner; a parent or care-taker; putting your money into a retirement savings account; investing in a clean vehicle or home energy—these are some of the things that can qualify you for a tax credit. Ask your tax professional to help you determine which credits may apply to you. For more information, check with David Benfield, CPA.

TAX TIP 5

Is your worker an independent contractor or an employee? The IRS uses three criteria to determine if a worker is an independent contractor or an employee: Behavioral control, financial control, and the type of relationship as perceived by both parties. Penalties for getting the classification wrong can be stiff, so be sure to consult your tax professional to make sure you get it right before you file your tax return.
