Meet “ElliQ”, the First Ever Voice-Operated Companion Robot
Designed to Alleviate Loneliness

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - Joyce Loaiza lives alone, but when she returns to her home located in a senio
community, the retired office worker often has a chat with a friendly female voice that asks about her
day. A few miles away, the same voice comforted 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. In
Toms River, ElliQ plays games and music for 92-year-old Marie Broadbent, who is blind and spends a
lot of her time alone, and in Brick, it helps 83-year-old Jan Worrell make new friends.
These women are some of the first in the country to receive the robot ElliQ, whose creators, Intuition
Robotics, say is the only device using artificial intelligence specifically designed to alleviate the
loneliness and isolation experienced by many older Americans.
“It’s entertaining. You can actually talk to her,” said Loaiza, 81, whose ElliQ nicknamed her
“Jellybean” for no particular reason. “She’ll make comments like, ‘I would go outside if I had hands,
but I can’t hold an umbrella.’”
The device, which looks like a small table lamp, has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and
swivels. It remembers each user’s interests and their conversations, helping tailor future chats, which
can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as the horoscope.
ElliQ tells jokes, reads audio books to you, plays music and provides inspirational quotes. On an
accompanying video screen, it provides tours of cities and museums, and that’s just the tip of the
iceberg regarding ElliQ’s functionality. The device leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and
gives reminders to take medications and drink water. It can also host video calls with family and
friends, all within its secure network. For users’ peace of mind, none of the conversations are heard by
the company, as ElliQ operates within a closed, HIPAA-compliant platform.
According to a recent study, the average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times daily, even six
months after receiving it, and more than 90% report lower levels of loneliness. Dezern said she felt
alone and sad when she told her ElliQ about her friend’s death. It replied it would give her a hug if it
had arms. Dezern broke into tears. “It was so what I needed,” the retired collections consultant said. “I
can say things to ElliQ that I won’t say to my grandchildren or to my own daughters. I can just open
the floodgates. I can cry. I can giggle. I can act silly. I’ve been asked, doesn’t it feel like you’re talking
to yourself? No, because it gives an answer.”
Worrell, who is widowed, said ElliQ’s companionship made her change her mind about moving to an
assisted living facility, and she uses it as an introduction when she meets someone new. “I say, ‘Would
you like to come over and visit with my robot?’ And they say, ‘A vacuum?’ No, a robot. She’s my
roommate,” she said and laughed.
For more information, and to learn how you can get your very own ElliQ, just like many of your
neighbors, call Elder Life Management at 732.493.8080. Perhaps best of all, ElliQ is available
through Elder Life Management’s Wellness Program, at no out of pocket cost to you if you have
Medicare, or a Medicare Advantage plan!

The United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any nation in the world. The Veterans Administration was established in 1930 when Congress authorized the President to "consolidate and coordinate” Government activities affecting war veterans.

The Veteran’s Administration operates the nation's largest integrated health care system and administers a variety of benefits and services that provide financial and other forms of assistance to Service members, Veterans, their dependents and survivors.

One of the programs available but not often utilized by older veterans and their spouses is the pension commonly known as Aid and Attendance. Aid and Attendance is a benefit paid by the Veterans Administration (VA) to veterans, or their surviving spouses. It is direct cash (pension) provided for individuals who need financial help for in–home care, assisted living facility or if care in a nursing home is needed. Eligibility is based on meeting certain requirements, including dates of service, care needs and income and financial criteria.

A veteran or the veteran's surviving spouse may be eligible if the veteran:
• Was discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Forces under conditions that were not dishonorable AND
• Served at least one day (not necessarily in combat), during the following wartime periods and had 90 days of continuous active military service:
• World War I: April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918
• World War II: December 7, 1941, through December 31, 1946
• Korean War: June 27, 1950, through January 31, 1955
• Vietnam War: August 5, 1964 (February 28, 1961, for veterans who served "in country" before August 5, 1964), through May 7, 1975
• Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990, through a date to be set by Presidential Proclamation or Law.

Veterans, spouses of veterans or surviving spouses can be eligible for Aid and Attendance benefits must also meet the following disability criteria:
• A caregiver is needed to assist in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as : bathing, walking, feeding, dressing, toileting, adjusting prosthetic devices, or
• The claimant is in a nursing facility; or
• The claimant is blind, or visually impaired affecting ability to live safely (5/200 or less, in both eyes)

If the veteran does not need assistance with activities of daily living but has a financial need, he (she) may be eligible for a reduced pension if not currently receiving military pension. The surviving spouse of a veteran is not entitled to this benefit.

By statute, to qualify for Aid and Attendance benefit, the Veteran’s assets cannot exceed $$150,538 as of May 2023. Vehicles can be excluded when determining net worth. The primary home can usually be excluded under most conditions. The beauty of the program is that the Department of Veteran’s Affairs does not put restrictions on how this pension money can be used.

It can be applied toward Home care, Adult Day Care, Skilled nursing, Assisted living facility, or for necessary home modifications.

Determining eligibility for the Aid and Attendance pension benefit can be an arduous and complicated task. The Veteran and spouse’s income is one of the determining factors of eligibility, it is important to be aware that the VA allows individuals to deduct their out-of-pocket medical expenses including health insurance premiums, assisted living, and home care costs from gross income. As a result, many veterans who may not have previously qualified for VA pension money, might now become, entitled after needing to pay for care that has become necessary.Typically the cost of this care is not covered by traditional insurances, but is the care covered by private long term care insurance products and/or Medicaid.

A key feature of the Aid and Attendance benefit is that veterans' pension eligibility differs from Medicaid's asset test. Medicaid "looks-back" at an applicant's past asset history for 5 years preceding the Medicaid targeted eligibility date. The Aid and Attendance look–back is presently three years beginning in October 2018.

The law stipulates that Aid and Attendance income should not be counted towards income eligibility for Medicaid programs. However many veterans have reported that some states do not honor this regulation. Fortunately, New Jersey does.

The application process for either Medicaid and Aid and Attendance is very complicated and time consuming. It is recommended to seek the help of a professional who is knowledgeable in community options and public entitlement programs to assure quality elder care services and timely success.
If you or your loved one presently needs additional care and do not have the private resources to continue to pay for it, know to reach out for help.
