The IRS added that most administrative functions will also come to a halt, as will many planning activities.

"Today, due to the government shutdown the American people lost access to many vital services provided by the IRS when the agency furloughed thousands of employees," National Treasury Employees Union President Doreen Greenwald said.

Americans can expect longer wait times, delays in changes to the tax code and backlogs, she said. "Taxpayers around the country will now have a much harder time getting the assistance they need, just as they get ready to file their extension returns due next week."

Filing deadlines still apply for taxpayers during a government shutdown. Oct. 15 is the deadline for those who secured extensions on their 2024 taxes.

Due to the overwhelming number of clients who expect me to provide tax preparation services for $50-$100, while delivering exceptional support to ensure maximum refunds, I have made the decision that 2025 will be the final year I file taxes for the majority of my clients. I am no longer willing to tolerate inquiries and criticism regarding my preparer fee, which is significantly lower than that of major tax preparation companies like Jackson Hewitt, Liberty Tax, and H & R Block. Unlike these companies, I provide personalized support, guiding clients through the process and offering complimentary tax education, yet I receive no loyalty in return. I will no longer provide free W4 preparation and tax education, nor will I bear the responsibility of protecting clients from potential audits resulting from excessive inquiries about refund status. Furthermore, I will not provide unlimited copies of tax files at no charge. I will also refrain from explaining refund processing timelines, as I am not affiliated with the IRS. Lastly, I will not accommodate clients who contact me outside of reasonable hours, inquiring about refund status before the PATH Act releases refunds. Moving forward, I will only provide tax preparation services to mature adults who respect my expertise and boundaries. As a professional with multiple W2 jobs, I aim to provide legitimate and proper tax filing services, rather than exploiting this service as a means to get rich quickly.
