I usually focus on the "what" when I talk about taxes - how I can help, giving advice, etc.
I rarely talk about how I got into it in the first place.
I started in tax as a way to earn money in college while also earning credit for practical experience. I found a local company that loved what they do and I learned from them. Taxes really clicked with me - they're a puzzle and everything has its place.
I spent two years with them and decided I could help more people by learning how the IRS works from the inside, so I went and got a job as a Revenue Agent in Nashville, Tennessee. I spent a year with them before I left. It's hard to be the bad guy and it wasn't the right role for me.
Then I spent another three years working for two different CPA's, one in Tennessee, one in Texas. Those roles weren't right either. I wasn't getting the same experience I got at the first office - one with direct contact with my clients, and direct responsibility over my work product.
At that point I decided I wanted to go out on my own. I started my own office and decided to put to use all the things I'd learned in the various places I'd worked, all with as personal of a touch as I could manage.
I take pride in the work I do, and I do it well. I take the time to do it right, and I make every effort to share with my clients what I did for them and why. I try to take the fear out of taxes. Because if you understand why your return looks the way it does, you have no reason to fear it.
