We had the pleasure of meeting our client in her new Santa Monica space last week in LA!

Check them out online or in person for ethical fashion made from dead stock fabrics in the USA.

We love getting to meet our peeps in person!

Even though we run our biz 💯 remotely & work with biz owners all over the USA we make it a point to see our crew in person whenever we can.

Have you gotten to meet clients or biz partners who aren’t based near you too? Isn’t it the best?! 🥰

Do you think you deserve to get a paycheck from your biz EVERY month?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The reality is that many entrepreneurs answer yes, but still don't pay themselves 🙁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If that’s you, we wanna introduce you to the practice of “Profit First”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Basically, instead of thinking of profit as a last-priority leftover:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 – 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘴 = 𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙁𝙄𝙏⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Flip the script with a reverse budgeting strategy that puts profit before expenses:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 – 𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙁𝙄𝙏 = 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘴⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of your paycheck ALWAYS being the first thing to go, you limit your expenses to make sure you ALWAYS get paid! Pretty great, right?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can read more about it in Mike Michalowicz’ popular book, but here’s a short summary of the process:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 – SET UP DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS AT YOUR BANK⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remember how your grandma used to budget for the month with cash in different envelopes? It’s the same idea here: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(1) Income (Checking)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(2) Owner’s Compensation (Checking)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(3) Operating Expenses (Checking)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(4) Profit (Savings)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(5) Tax (Savings)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Tip: you can usually give accounts nicknames on your banking site to help keep them straight!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2 – FIGURE OUT YOUR CURRENT SPENDING %⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Where does your revenue go when it comes in? Expenses, debt payments, etc? What can be changed?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3 – SET A GOAL FOR TARGET SPENDING %⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What % do you want to put in your pocket? (P.S. It’s ok to start conservatively, and work up!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4 – MAKE PAYMENTS TO MEET YOUR TARGET⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Use the % you set & make biweekly account transfers⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5 – THEN REEVALUATE + ADJUST EVERY QUARTER⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Again, this is just a quick summary – you can always read the book for more details!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you know anyone using profit first? If so, what do they think about it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In your biz, do you look at your financial reports each month? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This may not be your idea of fun - but here’s the GOOD news:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s easier than you think it is ❤️And doing it every month can help you save SO much time, stress & money.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let’s walk through it all together:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📆 1 - UPDATE and reconcile your transactions every single month. Otherwise, the reports will be useless.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📊 2 - RUN the three main financial reports:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📈 INCOME STATEMENT AKA P&L: This report tells you if your biz is making money (or not)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📈 CASH FLOW STATEMENT: This report tells you activity that impacted your cash & whether cash went up or down.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📈 BALANCE SHEET: This report gives you a snapshot of the current value of your business⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👀 3 – LOOK at the key numbers:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now that you’ve got the reports – what do you look for? And what does it mean? Here’s 3 key numbers:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💵 Net Profit – This tells you if your business is profitable, and if your profits are heading in an upward (or downward) pattern⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💵 Accounts Receivable – This tells you if you have a lot of unpaid invoices (and if you need to go after some slow-paying customers)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💵 Expenses – Compare your expense trends with your revenue growth. Are your expenses growing faster than revenue? (That’s a 🚩) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And that’s just scratching the surface 🥰⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Still not sold? We get it 😉 Fussing with financial reports every month … well, it probably isn’t your favorite thing to do (especially if your records are WAY behind), right? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No worries ❤️ We handle monthly reports – and their meanings – for our clients. And we’d love to help give you the same stress-free clarity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did you know that if you're selling a product, you generally won’t deduct the cost of purchasing that item or the materials to create it until you've sold it?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before selling the product, whatever you spent on it is part of your biz inventory.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let’s get started on calculating your cost of goods sold or COGS, so you're ready for that deduction when the time comes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some examples of costs that should be included in inventory & COGS:
💵 Raw material and production costs
💵 Finished Goods
💵 Packaging costs
💵 Manufacturing related labor costs
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now you can use the COGS formula 🔢
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉 Beginning Inventory + Purchases – Ending Inventory = COGS
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not the kind of reading you like to do? 😜 No problem. If COGS calculations and inventory tracking sounds more like torture to you - just reach out ❤️

Did you know that your biz needs good nutrition, just like your body? 🥒🍅🥕🥬
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course, we're not talking about things like lettuce and legumes 😜
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But think about it – how do YOU feel when you consistently eat healthy food?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💪 Your body is stronger, faster & more capable, right?
🧠 Your mind is clearer and you can make better decisions
❤️ And you also just feel better and more comfortable in your body!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And, ok, sure, you’ll definitely stay alive if you eat crappy food 🍟🍕 … But have you ever felt GOOD after a junk food binge?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Guess what? The same principles of nutrition 🥬 and junk food 🍕 apply in your business, too.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want your biz to perform at its best, then you have to feed it the “healthy stuff” 🥬
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And guess what biz task is just as healthy as eating your veggies every day?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
𝙐𝙥𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💪 You’ll have the information you need to respond faster to growth opportunities (one example: getting a small biz loan much faster!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧠 With up-to-date information and accurate financial reports, you’ll be able to make more strategic decisions (like which expenses to cut, and which of your revenue streams are the most profitable)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❤️ And the healthier your biz (and bank account) becomes, the more you’ll love it! 😉
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sounds WAY better than the “junk food results” of out-of-date bookkeeping, right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So – let’s get your business off that junk food habit and onto a healthy diet of regular bookkeeping, ASAP! 🥬
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
… Wait – let me guess. Numbers aren’t really your thing, right? 😬 Or maybe you’re totally overwhelmed by your REALLY out of date books.

Because we LOVE a good “how I started my business” story. We'll tell you ours if you tell us yours! 😉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So here’s how it happened for us:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After quitting our NYC jobs (Sandra ran a jewelry company that focused on vintage & repurposed materials & Chris was a store manager & bookkeeper) to travel for 18 months, we knew we wanted to be our own bosses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We wanted the freedom of a biz we could run from anywhere plus the impact of helping ecopreneurs succeed & take up more space in the biz world.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We both come from entrepreneurial families - Sandra's dad has owned a ski shop for 50+ years & Chris's family had a moving company in Sydney. Chris's bookkeeping roots actually go back to high school when he kept the family biz's books.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But it wasn’t until our world trip, that we finally went from dreaming about owning our own biz to doing 💪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After experiencing so many different cultures & places, we saw firsthand that there are a lot of ways to live.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We knew we had the power to build a life that was right for us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And our own biz was a key piece to the life we wanted.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t get us wrong – it took courage! We returned from our trip & spent the first 8 months living with family to make it work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were excited about building our bookkeeping biz, but it definitely took a leap of faith. 😬⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, we're happy to say, that it's been wonderful to work for ourselves, set our own schedules, be able to work from anywhere & to do it together. 🥰⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So that’s our story – now you tell us yours! ❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When it comes to tracking your business finances, can you get away with a spreadsheet? … Or is it better to use accounting software, like Quickbooks?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Honestly? It really depends on the size and type of your business.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curious if a spreadsheet could work for you? Here are some of the pros and cons of using it for your business bookkeeping:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PROS
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👍 Lower Cost
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a business owner, it’s important to find cost-effective solutions - and nothing is more cost-effective than free or a one-time, low cost!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👍 Awareness
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lack of automation will force you to do regular check-ins, which IF YOU DO THEM, can lead to a better understanding of biz finances.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👍 Small-Business Friendly
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you have a small biz with uncomplicated finances, you can use a simpler type of bookkeeping called “single entry”, which a spreadsheet can handle.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
CONS
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❌ Not Friendly for Bigger, Small Bizs
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If your business has lots of transactions or you have more complex financial statements, you’ll need double-entry bookkeeping, which is beyond Excel’s abilities
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❌ More Time and More Errors
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Spreadsheets don't do automation like software, so more manual work is required. Not only does that take longer, it’s more error-prone (which is bad at tax time!)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❌ Difficult to Share Access
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which one sounds easier? A centralized accounting software with separate login credentials? Or 53 emails between you and your accountant as you share 17 different Google Sheets?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, what do you think – is Excel right for you and your business, or do you need something more like Quickbooks?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have a great recommendation if you're looking for a smart spreadsheet that works! Just DM us for the info!

So … was that business lunch you paid for yesterday ACTUALLY tax-deductible? Or not at all? Or, uh, maybe just partially … ? 🤔⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t worry – after MULTIPLE changes to the tax law in the past three years, it’s understandably confusing. Here’s why:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👆🏼In 2018, the “Entertainment” part was removed from the tax-deductible “Meals + Entertainment” category⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does that mean? If you take your client to dinner & a concert, the dinner is deductible - but the show? That’s on you 🎸⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✌️ Then, in December of 2020, a temporary change was passed to help restaurants recover from Covid – and now anything you purchase from a restaurant in 2021 and 2022 is 100% deductible!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pretty cool, right?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does that mean? If you meet a client for a salad & pasta at the local Italian restaurant in 2021 or 2022 🍝 that meal is 100% deductible.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But here’s a quick list to help you tell at a glance if your food expense is 0%, 50% or 100% deductible⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
NOT DEDUCTIBLE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❌ Buying a coffee just for yourself on the way to work⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
❌ Your friend, or your client’s spouse or friend, at a business dinner⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
50% DEDUCTIBLE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✂️ Non-restaurant meal with a client (think pre-packaged grocery service)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
100% DEDUCTIBLE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💯 Company-wide party⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💯 Anything for clients or workers from a restaurant (in 2021 and 2022)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💯 Meals for yourself while traveling for work⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The 411 on GRANTS!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What are grants?
⇢ Money gifted to a biz or organization that doesn't need to be paid back!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ These differ from a biz loan because again you don't have to pay the moolah back!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How to get access to grants?
⇢ To receive a grant, you first have to apply...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ Applications vary, but you typically share why you need the money & how you plan to use it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ The grant world can be a competitive space, so look for grants that are a match for your biz's focus & goals, especially if you fall in a "special interest" category.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ Grant writers specialize in applying for grants - if you run a non-profit & know you'll regularly be on the hunt for grant support, hiring a grant writer could be a good option.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Where to research grants available?
⇢ Grants.gov
⇢ GrantsForWomen.org (women-owned bizs)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A couple of private grants we're aware of that are currently accepting applicants:
⇢ Alibaba & Hello Alice Grants - apply by Oct 21, 50 recipients receive 10K each. Go to alibaba.helloalice.com
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ Fearless Fund & Tory Burch Foundation - apply by Sept 22, 15 grants awarded between 10-20K each. Must be a revenue generating biz (100K minimum) that identifies as a woman of color biz. Go to fearless.fund
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⇢ Amber Grant - awarding one 10K grant per month to a female biz owner. Go to ambergrantsforwomen.com
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Grants can provide a really meaningful boost for small businesses and non-profits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are also lots of social impact-focused foundations that have grants specifically for co's & orgs out to make a difference.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you had success applying for grants?

What’s your favorite hobby? 🌊
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our favorite hobbies right now are hiking, surfing & skateboarding

(we know – pretty surprising for bookkeepers, right?? 😜)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you saw our name, Swell Advisors, and guessed that we love the ocean!

Our paths to be being surf-obsessed started a bit differently...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Chris dabbled in surfing as a kid growing up in Sydney, Australia. And I (Sandra) surfed a bit in high school, but the surf bug really grabbed me in my 20's.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What we share is a love for the lessons of time spent in the ocean...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Experiencing the power of nature & the reality of our itty bitty place in the mix of such a great force.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each time we surf in bigger waves, we get a clear picture of our relationship with fear. 👉🏼 Does it cripple us or can we learn to accept it is a part of expansion?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These are moments of full feeling, when there is space to notice subtle things, like shifts in color on glassy water, and the beauty of soft light as it awakens the day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In these times, it's easy to feel a deep connection to nature, to ourselves, and to the people around us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So now tell us about yours – what fun hobby (or hobbies) do you like to do in your spare time? And why did you fall in love with THAT specific hobby?

We'd love to hear!

So what do vegetable gardens 🍅 🌿 and your business finances 💵 have in common?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(Guess first – we’ll wait 😉 )
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both need maintenance to thrive and produce!
🍅 💵 🥒 💵 🍆 💵 🥕
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In your garden – if you don’t:
🌱 W**d
💧 Water
😎 Inspect
💪🏽 Add rich, healthy soil
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’ll end up with:
☠️ Dead and shriveled plants
☠️ Minimal fruit
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Same with your business finances and bookkeeping. If you don’t:
🌱 W**d out unnecessary expenses
💧 Water it with monthly updates
😎 Inspect it with regular financial reports
💪🏽 Keep it rich with data-driven business strategies
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your business will be in the same place as your garden:
☠️ Stunted revenue streams (and income levels)
☠️ Overdrawn accounts and late fees
☠️ No information on what the problems are – or how to start improving them

Instead of settling for an untended garden and worm-riddled tomatoes 🍅 Start tending to your business bookkeeping
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💵 Take your most profitable revenue streams – and double-down on them.
🥒 💵 Be ready and stress-free at tax time – and claim every possible tax-deductible expense
🥕 💵 And more!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We love diving into your biz finances as much as we enjoy cultivating veggies & fruit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Especially when sustainability is a focus of both.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So if you’re ready for more (and better) “tomatoes” 😉 🍅 in your business – just reach out!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Aug marked 2 yrs for us in biz together & we forgot to celebrate 🤦🏽‍♀️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of our fav parts of running Swell & working with biz owners who are out to do good in the world is that we get to radiate our power. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When our clients understand their finances & can build strong bizs - we radiate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When questions that were once stressful become clear - we radiate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When a biz owner who felt alone at that top experiences our partnership - we radiate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is the real impact we make & doing it together is such a gift!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you to all of the fab biz owners who have let us into their sacred spaces over the past couple of years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s been an honor that we aim to continue for many years to come!

Our team

Co-founders Sandra Merrill & Chris Zimmermann have been enabling small businesses to thrive for the past decade.

We understand your needs because before starting Swell Advisors, we ran businesses ourselves. Sandra led the finance, sales, and operations for a founder-driven jewelry company with a focus on repurposed materials. Chris oversaw bookkeeping, sales, and inventory management for a mature, family-owned ski and active apparel business.

As a husband and wife team, we met in the mountains 15 years ago, and also recently spent 1.5 years in pursuit of the best surf around the world. As we did so, we supported local people by helping them grow their eco-focused ventures. Our analytic skills and communication styles have made us trusted partners to founders and business leaders near and far. But, what truly separates us is our grounded energy, integrity, focus, and dedication.

At Swell Advisors, we believe positivity is powerful. We’re passionate about business, sustainability, and the impactful space where the goals of both align. We’re here to empower small companies and their big ideas and can’t wait to hear all about yours!
