From the Tax Foundation:

Tax Cuts Arrive in the Form of Larger Refunds

Larger refunds arriving: The 2026 filing season is the first to reflect tax changes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, including new deductions for tips, overtime, auto loan interest, and senior citizens.

Because these tax cuts weren't reflected in IRS withholding tables, many taxpayers over-withheld throughout 2025—and are now seeing that money returned as larger refunds.

By the numbers: The most recent data finds that the average refund is $3,804, up about 10 percent compared to this time last year.

Total refunds issued are also running ahead—$109 billion so far compared to $102 billion at the same point in 2025.

Nearly 69 percent of filers have received a refund so far, compared to about 63 percent for the full 2025 filing season.

Big picture: While bigger refunds will grab attention this filing season, the temporary provisions driving the surge aren't why the law is expected to boost the economy.

The real growth impact comes from permanent reductions in marginal tax rates that increase incentives to work and invest over the long term. Read more.

In the first week of doing 2025 Tax Returns, we haven't seen any clients with Tip Income. The clients that had overtime in 2025 are seeing substantial increases in refunds. If qualified OT is not shown on your 2025 W-2, bring your last pay stubs to your appointment!

We just transmitted our first tax return for the year. It was also the first client whose child was eligible for a Trump Account ($1,000) and they saved money from the overtime adjustment. A fun start to the 2026 Tax Season!

If you work with S corporations, you’ve probably seen the CP261 notice—the IRS letter confirming an S election. For years, it was a simple acknowledgment. That changed in late 2023. The IRS added language about reasonable compensation, and it’s not just a suggestion. It’s a compliance warnin...

Reminder to taxpayers who earned Overtime and/or Qualified Tips. If neither are noted on your 2025 W-2, bring your last pay stub of the year with you to your tax appointment. Only do so if you want to save paying for taxes that you may not have to!

01/20/2026

In person appointments start on January 26th (when the IRS opens e-file). You can request an appointment using our website, dbbooktax.com . If you are expecting refund(s), bring your routing and account number of a checking or savings account. The IRS stopped mailing refund checks on 9/30/2025. (technically, you can still get one if you do not mind waiting 6+ months to get it AFTER proving who you are to the IRS).

01/19/2026

Are you a business that paid $600+ for rent or services in 2025 and you haven't filed 1099's? Give us a call if you need help. We file all W-2's and 1099 Forms electronically (as required by law if you have any combination of 10 or more). The deadline to get these out is January 31st!

01/10/2026

You can schedule tax appointments for either the Lancaster or Tehachapi office on our website, dbbooktax.com. IRS e-filing starts on January 26th. Very important if expecting a refund, bring your routing number and account number for direct deposit. Paper checks went away on September 30th, 2025!

Not exciting to think about, but important!

What taxpayers can do to Get Ready for the 2026 tax filing season

The new year is less than a month away which means the 2026 tax filing season is drawing near. The IRS encourages taxpayers to “Get Ready” and start preparing now. Taking a few steps today can save time and help taxpayers ensure they’re filing accurate returns in the coming months.

The annual IRS Get Ready campaign is a series of tips, reminders and new information for taxpayers on what they need to know in preparation for filing season. For example, the One, Big, Beautiful Bill brings several changes or additions that can significantly affect federal taxes, credits and deductions. Tax deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and seniors are just a few of many recent updates.

Here’s some of the things taxpayers can do now:

Access or login to an existing IRS online account
An IRS online account allows taxpayers to access personal tax information, including recently filed returns, securely. Through this tool, taxpayers can:

View tax records, including adjusted gross income and transcripts
Make, schedule and view payments
Get or view their Identity Protection PIN
Authorize a tax professional to access their tax records digitally
Access available Forms W-2 and certain 1099s
View and edit communication preferences from the IRS and alternative media such as Braille, large print and more
Receive and view over 200 IRS digital notices.
Set up or change payment plans and check their balance
Gather and organize tax records
Having organized tax records helps taxpayers file complete and accurate tax returns and avoid errors that could delay refunds. This may also help the taxpayer identify deductions or credits that may have been overlooked.

Most income is taxable, including unemployment compensation, refund interest and income from the gig economy and digital assets. Taxpayers should watch for and gather essential forms, such as Forms W-2, Wage and Tax Statement and other income documents, when they become available in 2026.
