For those of you with a significant ownership interest in a corporation or LLC, please be aware there is a new filing requirement. It's called the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI). For entities registered prior to 2024, the filing due date is 1/1/25. For entities formed during 2024, the BOI filing is due within 90 days. The fine for filing late is $500 per day. Changes for 2019:
The Florida minimum wage increases from $8.25 to $8.46 per hour. If you are involved with commercial real estate in Florida, the sales tax rate decreases from 5.8% to 5.7%. Note this does not include any applicable local option discretionary sales surtax.

Here's something for all you Seminoles, Gators, Tigers, etc. to consider:

Starting in 2018 the new tax law eliminates the current deduction of 80% of the amount paid to school boosters organizations that directly or indirectly gives the donor the right to purchase preferred seating to athletic events.

If you prepay your 2018 deduction in 2017, you will still be able to deduct the contribution, even though it applies to the 2018 year. An easy way to save a few $.

Note, most Boosters will happily take multiple years of your money if you desire.

There's still time for some year end tax planning. The traditional wisdom is to take deductions in 2016 instead of waiting until 2017. Also, try to defer income to 2017 if possible. This is especially important for high income taxpayers who might be expecting lower tax rates for 2017 under the new administration. Of course, every situation is different, so seek the advice of a qualified tax professional.
