There's a meeting most small business owners have never had.

It's not tax preparation. That's March, and it's about last year. This one is tax planning. It happens in November, and it's about this year, while this year can still change.

We take the books through October, project the full year, and put a tax number on the table. Then we walk through what's still open before December 31. Retirement contributions, equipment timing, how you pay yourself, whether the business structure you picked years ago still fits the business you have today.

Some owners walk out with a smaller tax bill. Every owner walks out knowing the number. Both are worth the hour.

If you've never had that meeting, this is the year. Let's book it for November. 330-686-6666

If you're still doing your own books, picture two different Januarys.

In the first one, the year ends and you spend three weekends going back through twelve months of bank statements, guessing at receipts from June, and building a spreadsheet for your tax preparer. The return gets filed in March, or it gets extended.

In the second one, the books have been reconciled every month, the year closes by the middle of January, and you get a profit number, a tax estimate, and a return filed while everybody else is still hunting for receipts.

The difference isn't effort. It's who's doing the work and when. The second January starts with a decision this fall, so the handoff lands on a clean year-end.

We'd love to show you what that January looks like. 330-686-6666

Third-quarter payroll returns are due at the end of this month. If you run your own payroll, that's the federal 941 plus the state and local filings that ride along with it.

If reading that made your shoulders drop, here's something to think about this fall.

January 1 is the cleanest day of the year to hand payroll off. Year-to-date totals start fresh, the 2026 W-2s come out of one system, and the new setup starts with a clean first quarter instead of inheriting half a year of someone else's numbers.

That means the decision gets made in October and November, not on New Year's Eve. The setup takes a few weeks. The relief lasts all year. Let's talk about January. 330-686-6666

Three bookkeeping jobs that go a lot better before Thanksgiving than after Christmas.

Reconcile. Every bank and credit card account matched to the books through September. Not "probably close." Matched. That's where the missing deposits and the double-entered bills turn up.

Categorize. Every expense in the right bucket. "Miscellaneous" is where deductions go to die.

Project. Once the books are clean through the third quarter, we can tell you roughly what April looks like. That number is what every year-end decision hangs on.

Thanksgiving is five weeks away. Plenty of time, if you start now. 330-686-6666

Three dates on next year's calendar that get decided this year.

January 15 is the last estimated tax payment for 2026. If you're going to be short, it's much nicer to find out in November than the week it's due.

The end of January is W-2s for every employee and 1099s for every contractor. The forms themselves are easy. Having the right addresses, the signed W-9s, and clean payroll records behind them is the October job.

March 15 is S-corp and partnership returns. Businesses that close their books in January sail through that one. The ones that close in March end up filing an extension.

None of these are surprises. They're just early. The fourth quarter is where the first quarter gets easy. 330-686-6666

From Beth đź’™

October is National Women's Small Business Month, and I want to say something to the women I work with.

You started the salon, the clinic, the cleaning company, the consulting practice. You did it with a kid on your hip or a second job running in the background, and you're still here.

I've been in accounting for more than 25 years, and my favorite part of the job is sitting across from an owner who built something real and showing her what it's actually worth. The profit she didn't know she had. The tax bill she can still change. The hire she can afford.

If you're a woman running a business around here and nobody has shown you your numbers lately, come see me. I'd be honored.

Happy Boss's Day! Especially to the owners out there who don't have one.

No one to approve your vacation, sign off on the big purchase, or tell you the numbers look okay. You're the boss of sales, hiring, payroll, and taking out the trash.

The catch with having no boss is there's nobody checking your work, either. For a lot of owners, the closest thing is their accountant. Somebody who looks at the numbers with you, says the uncomfortable thing out loud, and asks what you're planning before you do it.

If you don't have that person yet, we'd be glad to interview for the job. 330-686-6666

Tomorrow is October 15, the last day for extended personal and C-corp returns. There's no extension after this one.

If yours is in, enjoy a quiet Thursday. If it's not, call us today, not tomorrow afternoon. And remember that the extension only bought time to file, not time to pay, so interest has been building on any balance since April.

Once it's done, here's the bigger fix. If you extended because the records weren't ready, this is the quarter to change that. Next October should just be another Thursday. 330-686-6666

Quick heads-up before the weekend: Monday, October 12 is a Federal Reserve holiday.

That means the system banks use to move direct deposits takes the day off. If your payday is Monday and the payroll hasn't been sent yet, it may not land until Tuesday. Paydays early next week can be affected too, depending on when your payroll processes.

It's a small calendar trap. Free if you know about it, expensive in awkward conversations if you don't.

If you run your own payroll, check your deadline today. If we run it, you're covered. 330-686-6666

Saturday is World Mental Health Day. We're accountants, not counselors, but we see the money side of this every single week.

The owners who lose sleep over money usually aren't the ones with the worst numbers. They're the ones who don't know their numbers. The envelope that hasn't been opened. The tax bill they've been guessing at since spring. The payroll account that's "probably fine."

Not knowing is its own kind of stress, and more sales don't fix it. Seeing the real number does. Sometimes it's better than you feared. Sometimes it's worse, and now there's a plan. Either way, you sleep.

If you've been carrying a guess around, let's trade it for a number. 330-686-6666
