Take a moment to read about one of our amazing clients! Amy Keller is changing the concept of candy! This is good for us, good for the planet and simply a cool idea! I am very proud to say that BBTA Tax Advisors are part of her team, ensuring that small businesses have the best tax and accounting advice available!

FAVES from Climate Candy are made from fruits and vegetables that would have otherwise gone to waste at farms and grocery stores.

Last post of the series! "Top five ways to make sure that you get audited by the IRS". We hope you found our advice on how to get an auditor's attention helpful.

#5 HOME OFFICE

Just because you worked from home, does not mean that you can write off your home office expenses. You also must prove that your home office is exclusively and regularly where you work and that the area is separate and only used for business - sorry, but your kitchen table or the desk in your bedroom doesn’t count. If you are a W2 employee, don’t even think of trying to write off business expenses such as a home office, utilities, or internet - even if you had to work from home due to Covid. This is a very easy tax dodge for the IRS to spot, and when they do, they’ll come looking for all the other ways you might be holding out on them.
Feeling lonely? How about a visit from the IRS?
You might think the IRS has a building full of auditors peering over your tax return and waiting for you to slip up. Well, they do, but in recent years the IRS has focused on finding compliance errors that are easy to spot and simple to enforce. It might take the IRS a year or more to catch up with you, but when they do you will owe not just the back taxes, but also fines and interest that might add up to more than the taxes you skipped paying. But if you still really want to get the IRS’s attention, you can read this series on how to make certain they notice you.

It's time for number four of the "Top five ways to make sure that you get audited by the IRS"

#4 LARGE CHARITABLE DONATIONS

Everyone loves it when you give to charity, even the IRS, and for that reason, the tax code encourages charity donations - up to a point. While you don’t need to itemize any individual donation under $250, for any donation above $250 you should keep a letter proving that the donation was made to a registered charity - and remember, your friend’s Gofundme is NOT a registered charity. And if you made a bunch of donations under $250? Well if you are going to claim that more than 10% of your income went to charity, be prepared to have the paperwork ready to show the IRS agent who will be asking you for it.

Time for part three in our series "The top five ways to make sure that you get audited by the IRS"

#3 MATH ERRORS

Remember that the IRS has a copy of all your W2s and 1099s (your paychecks), and your 1098 (your mortgage interest). So it doesn’t take a lot of work for the IRS computer system to notice when the numbers on your tax return aren’t the same as the numbers reported to them by your employer, bank, and brokerage account. If you are going to do your taxes by hand or use online tax software, make sure that you double-check that the numbers match what’s on the documents you’ve been sent. Another way to get the attention of the IRS is to use big, round numbers on your tax filing; it’s like you are just begging to be audited.
