While the sentiment that one must be “ready to lose money” is a common theme in trading, Buffett’s actual philosophy focuses on the distinction between market volatility and permanent loss.

In a 2018 interview with CNBC, Buffett pointed out that anyone who cannot witness their stock holdings decline by 50% without becoming “panic-stricken” should not be in the stock market. This isn’t because he encourages losing money-in fact, his most famous rule is “Never lose money”-but because short-term price drops are an inevitable part of long-term growth.

Buffett’s career is defined by staying the course when others panic. During the 2008 financial crisis, he famously wrote an op-ed for The New York Times titled “Buy American. I Am,” while the market was in a tailspin.
