One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that many people come to me without fully understanding the difference between qualified and non-qualified investment accounts.

They’ve done a great job saving… but nobody ever clearly explained:
• how the accounts are taxed
• when withdrawals can be taken
• or how different accounts work together in retirement.

That confusion can create unnecessary taxes, limited flexibility, or missed planning opportunities later on.

So I put together this simple visual to help break it down.

Qualified accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs can offer valuable tax advantages, while non-qualified accounts can provide flexibility and accessibility. Both can play an important role in a retirement plan (if used correctly).

Understanding the difference is one of the first steps toward building a more tax-efficient retirement strategy.

If you have questions about how your accounts fit together, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

Recently helped a couple prepare for retirement.

Before:
• scattered accounts
• unclear income plan
• too much equity exposure
• uncertainty about taxes

After:
• organized strategy
• defined income framework
• stress-tested retirement plan
• more confidence about timing retirement

Financial planning isn’t just numbers.

Sometimes the biggest benefit is helping people sleep better.

What most people nearing retirement get wrong:

They focus entirely on RETURNS.

But retirement success depends more on:

• withdrawal strategy
• tax efficiency
• risk exposure
• income timing
• avoiding major mistakes early in retirement

Two people can earn the exact same market return…
and have completely different retirement outcomes.

A couple retiring at 65 today may spend over $300,000 on healthcare during retirement.

Most people prepare for retirement…
but underestimate the cost of staying retired.

The biggest retirement risks aren’t always market crashes.

Sometimes it’s:
• inflation
• taxes
• healthcare
• sequence-of-return risk
• helping adult children financially

Retirement planning today is less about hitting a number…
and more about building flexibility.

I reviewed a retirement portfolio today that looked diversified…
but 72% of it moved almost exactly the same during market drops.

The client had:
• multiple mutual funds
• several account types
• different fund managers

But underneath it all, the risk exposure was heavily concentrated.

This is one of the biggest issues I see with people nearing retirement:

They own “a lot of investments” but not true diversification.

Retirement isn’t just about growth anymore.
It’s about avoiding the mistakes that permanently damage income plans.

Most people don’t realize the risk until the market reminds them.

There are clear similarities between the AI bull market cycle and the dotcom boom of the late 1990s. Technology stocks provided stock market leadership; valuations were elevated; there were segments of market speculation; and technology advances were life changing. But in terms of what companies are leading the current technology revolution, how the stock market is valuing them, how much speculation is taking place, and what stage of the cycle we’re in, we see important distinctions.
