Tax Refund Deposit Dates 2024
The IRS has provided the following estimated direct deposit tax refund dates for 2024:
If the IRS accepts an e-filed return by January 29, 2024, the direct deposit refund may be sent as early as February 9, 2024.
Potential refund dates for those who filed between January 23 and January 28 include February 17 for direct deposit.
Within 21 days, the IRS expects to process electronically filed tax returns. However, returns with EITC or CTC may have refunds delayed until March to verify credits. There may be a minor wait if you file during the busiest time of year, which is late March through April 15.

Exceptions to the 21-Day Tax Refund Timeline
While the 21-day rule serves as a helpful benchmark for most electronically filed returns with direct deposit, there are certain scenarios that can push your refund deposit date further down the calendar. The following important exceptions should be noted:
Thе Additional Child Tax Crеdit (ACTC) and thе Earnеd Incomе Tax Crеdit (EITC):
Claiming these refundable credits often triggers additional scrutiny from the IRS due to potential fraud concerns.
To ensure accuracy, the IRS may hold onto your refund until mid-February, potentially delaying your deposit until early March.
Errors or Incomplete Information:
Any discrepancies or missing information on your tax return can raise red flags for the IRS, necessitating manual verification and delaying your refund.
Ensure you double-check your return for accuracy and completeness before submitting it.
Paper Returns and Complex Filings:
Compared to electronically filed returns with straightforward information, paper returns and those involving complex situations like self-employment income or foreign assets typically take longer to process.
This can add weeks or even months to your wait time.
Audits and Reviews:
If your return is selected for an audit or further review, your refund will be placed on hold until the process is complete.
This can be a lengthy procedure, so be prepared for a significant delay.
How to Check Your Tax Refund Status?
The IRS offers a convenient online tool to track your refund’s progress: “Where’s My Refund?”
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it:
Head to the official IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/.
Move your cursor down the webpage until you find the “Tools” area. Under that, you’ll find “Where’s My Refund?”. Click on it.
On the “Where’s My Refund?” page, you’ll be prompted to enter three pieces of information:
Enter your Social Security number exactly as it appears on your tax return.
Select your filing status (e.g., Single, Married Filing Jointly).
Enter the exact amount of your anticipated refund as shown on your tax return. Do not include any cents.
Tips:
You can check your refund status 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as long as it’s been 24 hours since the IRS electronically filed your return.
If you filed your return jointly, you can only track the status using the primary taxpayer’s Social Security number.
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool typically updates once a day, usually overnight.
If your refund status is “Processing” or “Your refund date will be provided when available”, there’s no need to check daily. The tool will automatically update when your status changes.

Pay your taxes. Get your refund status. Find IRS forms and answers to tax questions. We help you understand and meet your federal tax responsibilities.
