Hello friends and fam,

The IRS and Treasury rolled out a preliminary list of occupations that will be eligible for the federal income tax break on tip income beginning in 2025 due to the OBBBA. Positions that “customarily and regularly receive tips” as of Dec. 31, 2024, are eligible for the break. The official list is due by Oct. 2, 2025. A total of 68 jobs across eight broad categories, including food and beverage, hospitality, entertainment, personal services, transportation, home services, and wellness and recreation, are included in the tip break.

Everyone from bartenders and rideshare drivers to nail technicians, tour guides, and influencers may qualify. Eligibility is also based on income limits ($150,000 for singles, $300,000 for joint filers), proper tip reporting, and documentation. Keep in mind that industries that do not regularly receive tips, like health care or performing arts, are not eligible for the income exemption.

If you work in one of these fields, I strongly recommend that you start tracking your tips meticulously and look for the finalized IRS list this fall.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBAA), signed into law by Trump on July 4, 2025, has some good stuff in it, but be warned: many of the benefits expire in 2028, and other attractive features have income caps and other limitations that make them inaccessible to those who could benefit the most. For the short term, it looks beneficial to many. If you would like a copy of the PDF summary, please let me know in the comments, and I'll send it to you.
