As a bookkeeper we spend a lot of time chasing W-9s to prepare 1099s. I found this article quite interesting and hope that those individuals that have excuses why they do not need to supply a W-9 get an understanding of why it is so vital and what the cost to them could be.

If you want to be paid, refusing to hand over a Form W-9 can be a mistake. If a payor fails to collect your W-9, they may withhold taxes, even if you are not an employee. This “backup withholding” at 24% is the usual consequence of refusing to hand over a W-9 and is a nightmare on your taxes.

One of the areas that business owners struggle with his how much to pay themselves.
