Are you someone who still pays bills through the mail? Please be vigilant on keeping track of the checks you mail. We have had several mailboxes in our area broken into since COVID and we do not use them any longer. We have walked into the post office and put the envelopes with our bill payments in the hands of the postal worker sure that they would reach their destination – they were stolen. It seems that no matter how you mail it or how you disguise it, the thieves seem to get their hands on it. They may wash the check - your check but with a different name and/or amount on it. They may create their own check using your routing and account number and transfer your signature to the fake check. Contact your bank to find out how you can prevent these fake/washed checks from stealing your hard-earned money. The thief may try to access your account directly by having the bank send you a code and then call you (pretending to be your bank) to verify a transaction and ask for the code they sent you. They may even text/call you claiming fraudulent activity on your account and asking you for personal information so they can gain access to your account and wipe you out. These are examples of daily occurrences that we hear about and sometimes experience ourselves. When it comes to your finances and personal information, do not trust anyone. They can even spoof any phone number and have it appear on your caller ID to make you think it is legitimate. Do not give them the information. Get their name and call the number that you have on file - not the number they called from - to verify that the bank or office needs your information. You can even go to the location and explain the text, email, or phone call you received to verify the caller/writer. Finally, if the text or email includes a link, do not click on the link even if it looks legitimate. Always go to your app or use your browser to go to the website.
