As the 2026 tax season gets underway, many taxpayers and preparers alike are exploring how artificial intelligence can help with accuracy and efficiency. But, there’s also a clear need for caution. Time your income and expenses strategically, not just annually.

Many business owners focus on tax planning once a year, but meaningful savings often come from quarter-by-quarter income and expense timing, especially for pass-through entities.

For example, accelerating deductible expenses or delaying invoicing can reduce current-year taxable income, but only when it aligns with cash flow, entity structure, and upcoming tax law changes. In some cases, doing the opposite, recognizing income sooner or deferring deductions, can be smarter if tax rates or business profitability are expected to rise.

This strategy becomes even more powerful when paired with:
-Entity-specific rules (S corp vs. partnership vs. Schedule C)
-Bonus depreciation and phased-out deductions
-Estimated tax planning to avoid penalties and overpayments

The key is that timing decisions should be intentional, modeled in advance, and revisited throughout the year, not made reactively at filing time.

For business owners, proactive tax planning is rarely about one big write-off. It’s about making dozens of smaller, well-timed decisions that compound over time.

If questions come up or circumstances change during the year, your Sherwood Tax team is always available to talk through how those shifts may impact your tax plan.

The IRS has officially announced that the 2026 tax filing season will open on Monday, January 26, 2026. This year also brings several new tax law provisions from the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, which may affect federal taxes, credits, and deductions for 2025 returns.

Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any taxes due. The IRS expects to receive approximately 164 million individual returns, with most filings submitted electronically.

As filing season gets underway, now is a great time to ask questions, clarify changes, and make sure you are prepared. Sherwood Tax clients are encouraged to reach out to their Client Success Manager with any questions or concerns so we can help you stay informed, organized, and confident throughout the filing process.

We are here to support you every step of the way this tax season.

As we move through the 2026 filing season, Sherwood Tax wants to address ongoing misinformation circulating online regarding the deductibility of personal expenses, specifically claims about writing off the cost of a private chef as a business expense.

A popular tax influencer has suggested that hosting frequent business meetings at home, even involving family members who sit on a board, allows the cost of a private chef to be deducted. This guidance is incorrect and has been widely cautioned against by reputable tax professionals across the industry.

Two key sections of the Internal Revenue Code make this clear.

Section 162 allows deductions only for expenses that are both ordinary and necessary to operating a business. Daily meals prepared in a private residence, particularly when involving family members, do not meet this standard and would be difficult to defend under audit.

Section 262 explicitly disallows deductions for personal, living, or family expenses unless the tax code clearly provides an exception. Recharacterizing household food and meal preparation as a business expense is not permitted.

Additionally, tax court precedent reinforces this position. In Fitch v. Commissioner, the court ruled that meals involving only spouses are personal in nature and not deductible, even when business is discussed.

Tax planning should always be based on the law, not viral advice. If you have questions about what is deductible in 2026 or want to ensure your return is compliant and defensible, Sherwood Tax clients are encouraged to reach out to their Client Success Manager for guidance.

Sound tax advice protects your business today and in the years ahead.
